ISIS Learning to Fly Fighter Jets Captured From Syrian Army Fighter-Jets-600x330

The jihadists of the Islamic state (ISIS) have captured three fighter jets and they are now learning how to handle them with the help of Iraqi pilots who joined them in Syria, reported Friday, Oct. 17, the Syrian Observatory of Human rights (SOHR), based on witnesses.

The jets, a Mig-21 and a Mig-23, are located on a Syrian military airfield which ISIS took control of in Al-Djarrah in the province of Aleppo, in northern Syria, according to SOHR.

“They have trainers, Iraqi officers who were pilots for Saddam Hussein,” said Rami Abdel Rahman, head of the SOHR. “People have seen them fly, they took off on numerous occasions from the airfield.”

After the dissolution of the Iraqi army by the United States, several former Sunni officers had joined the ranks of the Islamic State of Iraq, Iraqi branch of al-Qaeda later which is now known only as Islamic state. In June the group proclaimed a “caliphate” in the territories it controls in Syria and Iraq after lightning offensives in both countries.

Witnesses, according to the SOHR, have repeatedly seen the planes flying low to avoid detection by radar, after taking off from the al-Jarrah airport.
Two of the aircraft were taken from Tabqa, a military airport captured by ISIS in the summer in the northern province of Raqa, after bloody fighting in which hundreds of soldiers died.

Since the beginning of the year the jihadists have gained control of three military airports. In addition to Tabqa and al-Jarrah, they captured the airport of Bouqamal in the east, and tried to take control of the one in Koueiris near Aleppo.

The SOHR was not able to verify if the jihadists have used missiles in air attacks.

ISIS, which strikes terror in the territories it controls, has been the target of airstrikes conducted inside Syria by the coalition led by Washington since September 23.
