Recently I laid out evidence that (as God stated), the stars were placed in the heavens to be signs to Adam and his descendants, and that these star-signs (in Greek “Zodiac”, in Hebrew “mazzaroth”,) point out the path of redemption: the promised Messiah. As promised, we now delve deeper. Beginning with the Hebrew New Year.

First, a little more background on the zodiac we are familiar with. What the zodiac is, specifically, is the path that the sun travels, from an earthly perspective, through the sky over the course of a year. The sun appears to move because the earth is moving around it, and because the stars move at a different pace, the sun seems to occupy each zodiac segment for about a month. Since the perception of the procession of the sun through our sky is dependent on where you are geographically and in history, that gives us an idea when and where the Mazzaroth was devised.

Both Persian and Arab histories ascribe its creation to Adam, Seth, and Enoch, its earliest depictions are in Babylon and Egypt; from analysis of ancient depictions of the zodiac however, the origin of the astrological signs that define the zodiac origin is estimated to have occurred as early as 10,000 BC and not later than 6,000 BC.

Josephus writes that the Mazzaroth was created by the family of Seth, so that the coming judgments of water and then fire would not eradicate the memory of God’s promise of redemption, that the Mazzaroth would preserve it for all generations to come.

Bottom line? It was a mnemonic, a memory-helper devised as an easy way to communicate and remember the promise of redemption in a world corrupted by man’s sin. A redeemer painted in the symbols assigned to the twelve stations of the zodiac that God provided by the stars with which he garnished the sky.

Stars, which He Himself named, according to Psalm 147:4. As we will see, the names of those stars help tell the story that God wanted all nations of the earth, throughout all time, to remember.

Beginning with the beginning of the Jewish year, in October, which coincides, typically, with Virgo.

Virgo, like all the other zodiac signs, consists of a main constellation and three associated constellations called decans, which together flesh out what the sign was intended to convey. The main constellation, together with its three minor constellations, decans, represent the neighborhood in which the sun could be found during the time that that zodiac symbol defined.

Virgo, the virgin, fairly obviously represents the future reality of God in human form-- the Messiah promised almost as soon as Eve ate the apple, when God told the serpent that he would be vanquished by the coming redeemer:

Quote :: “And I will put enmity Between you and the woman, And between your seed and her Seed; He shall bruise your head, And you shall bruise His heel.” (Genesis 3:15 NKJV)

Virgois represented in the traditional zodiac (the modern craze for astrology has replaced the traditional depictions with very stylized icons) by a woman holding a branch in one hand, and an ear of corn or a sprig of wheat in the other, pictures readily explained in Scripture.

The branch:

Quote :: There shall come forth a Rod from the stem of Jesse, And a Branch shall grow out of his roots The Spirit of the Lord shall rest upon Him, The Spirit of wisdom and understanding, The Spirit of counsel and might, The Spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the Lord. (Isaiah 11:1-2)

Quote :: Behold, the days are coming,” says the Lord, “That I will raise to David a Branchof righteousness; A King shall reign and prosper, And execute judgment and righteousness in the earth. (Jeremiah 23:25)

The seed:

Quote :: And I will put enmity between you and the woman, And between your seed and her seed; He shall bruise your head, And you shall bruise His heel.” (Genesis 3:15)

Quote :: In your seed all the nations of the earth shall be blessed, because you have obeyed My voice.” (Genesis 22:18)

Quote :: Most assuredly, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the ground and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it produces much grain. (John 12:24)

The Branch and the Seed are easily identifiable in Scripture as the Christ.

The brightest star in Virgo—Spica (derived from the Latin “spîca virginis”, (the virgins branch) was in ancient times called Zimach (recorded by the Persian astronomer Albamazar), an obvious cognate to the Hebrew Tsemech, “the branch”. Tsemech, in fact, despite being one of 20 Hebrew words translated “branch” in Scripture, is used only four times, exclusively for designation of the Messiah, as above.

The beta ( β) star (second brightest) is Zavijaveh, meaning gloriously beautiful:

Quote :: “In that day the Branch of the Lord shall be beautiful and glorious; And the fruit of the earth shall be excellent and appealing For those of Israel who have escaped.” (Isaiah 4:2)

Not convinced yet?

Wait, there’s more! The three decans! The first was Coma, pictured as a woman with a male child in her arms. The ancient name, Comah, means the desired or longed for:

Quote :: . . .they shall come to the Desire of All Nations, and I will fill this temple with glory,’ says the Lord of hosts (Haggai 2:7)

Albumazar, who lived 1300 years ago, wrote that the Persians, Chaldeans, Egyptians, and Greeks all taught that the child pictured would be born of a pure royal virgin.

And that child, having been born, in Greek, was named Christos.

This decan is currently named Coma Berenices (“Berenices Hair”), having been perverted in Egypt when the shorn hair of Berenice, the wife of King Ptolemy III was stolen from the temple. The court astronomer, to console her, told Berenice that Jupiter found her so desirable that he took her hair and made it into a constellation (the Greek word for hair, Co-me, being all too convenient.) The much more ancient Egyptian zodiac, however, confirms the picture of mother and child as the original symbol, as does the Egyptian name for Coma: Shesh-nu. (The son desired).

The second decan, Centaurus, gives us kind of the flip side. The ancient name, Bezeh, means in Arabic, Chaldean, and Hebrew, “despised”, as in Isaiah 53:

Quote :: And when we see Him, There is no beauty that we should desire Him. He is despised and rejected by men, A Man of sorrows and acquainted with grief. And we hid, as it were, our faces from Him; He was despised, and we did not esteem Him.

He was desired, but when he came, he was despised. The centaur, half human, half beast reflects his dual nature, and the ancient name of the brightest star, Toliman means heretofore and hereafter, i.e,

Quote :: “. . .the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End,” says the Lord, “who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty.” (Revelation 1:

The Greek name of Centaurus was Cheiron, meaning the pierced. And the Hebrew name makes the meaning inescapable:

Asmeath. The sin Offering.

The third decan is Bootes, from the Hebrew word “bow”, which means to come, found in Psalm 96:

Quote :: For He is coming, for He is coming to judge the earth. He shall judge the world with righteousness, And the peoples with His truth.

Egyptians called him Bootes “Smat”, meaning ‘the one who rules”, and Bau (also “the coming one”).

The brightest star in Bootes is Arcturus, which also means, “he comes”. Other stars mean, “the treading under foot”, and “the pierced”.

Bottom line: Virgo with her decans gives us the whole plan of redemption as a trailer: the child born of a virgin, though desired, would be despised and pierced, acting as a sin offering for the whole world. But that’s not the end.

He will return. But not as a sin offering. As the judge and the redeemer.

God confided in Job what the signs in the stars were for: to lay out the plan of redemption that God had established:

Quote :: Can you lead forth the Mazzaroth in their season, or can you guide the Bear with its children? Do you know the ordinances of the heavens? Can you establish their rule on the earth?? (Job 38:31-33 ESV)

he Mazzaroth was designed to remind all of human history of the redemption God had already ordained, and He used the stars to define the symbolic pictures, not the pictures to identify the stars. Which explains why the stars never really looked like the picture we’ve all been taught that they represent. It’s the other way around.

God also told Job that only he had the power to make sure what he ordained would come to pass.

Interestingly, the Sphinx is thought by some to be the oldest man-made thing on earth, itself possibly dating back to as much as 10,000 years ago.

So isn’t it interesting that the Sphinx itself is apparently a representation of the Mazzaroth: the head of a woman (Virgo, the first sign in the Mazzaroth) followed by the body of the lion (Leo), the last sign.

Wouldn’t you love to know who built it? Was it Adam, Seth, and Enoch, as a back-up reminder of God’s Gospel in the stars?

I guess we’ll just have to find out when we get there.
