Report: Israeli Air Strikes Also Hit Damascus Airport

Strong blasts hit the outskirts of Syria’s capital early on Sunday,
with reports saying that they were results of Israeli airstrikes on a
military research center and Damascus Airport. Israel is thought to have
carried out a similar attack days ago.

Syrian TV accused Israel of the attack and of being in alignment with rebel forces.

“The new Israeli attack is an attempt to raise the morale of the
terrorist groups which have been reeling from strikes by our noble
army,” the report said.

The notion was backed by Syrian Deputy Foreign Minister Faisal
Mekdad, who said the attack proved that there is an alliance between
Israel and Islamists trying to topple the Syrian government. In an
interview with CNN he said the airstrikes are a “declaration of war” by
Israel and that Syria would retaliate in its own time and way.

Massive explosions have been heard near Mount Qasioun in Damascus.
The area hosts the Jamraya military research center, which came under
Israeli attack earlier in January and marked the first incursion by
Israel into Syrian airspace in six years.

A senior US official confirmed to NBC News that Israeli Air Force bombed the military research center.

The overnight Israeli strike reportedly targeted Iranian-supplied
missiles to Lebanese guerrilla group Hezbollah, a Western intelligence
source told Reuters. “In last night’s attack, as in the previous one,
what was attacked were stores of Fateh-110 missiles that were in transit
from Iran to Hezbollah,” the source said.

organisations reported yesterday, citing unnamed Israeli and US
officials.

If confirmed, the attack - which targeted sophisticated "game
changing" arms and not chemical weapons, according to the reports by
Reuters and the Associated Press - would be the second strike this year
that Israel carried out against Syria.
Such an Israeli military
move against Syria could step up tensions between two neighbours that
consider each other enemies, coming just three months after Israeli
officials strongly indicated that the country was behind a strike in
Syrian territory against a convoy that it believed to be carrying
anti-aircraft weapons to Hizbollah.
Benjamin Netanyahu, the
Israeli prime minister, has warned in recent months that Israel would
act militarily to prevent weapons - including chemical arms - from
reaching Hizbollah or Islamist groups fighting against forces of the
Syrian president Bashar Al Assad in the country's two-year-old civil
war. Israel fought a 34-day war with Lebanon in 2006 and says Hizbollah
has been building up its arsenal - especially of long-range rockets - in
preparation for another round of fighting.
Spokespeople for the Israeli army and for Mr Netanyahu's office declined to comment on the reports yesterday.
Syria
yesterday appeared to play down reports of the strike, with Syria's
ambassador to the United Nations, Bashar Ja'afari, telling the Reuters
news agency: "I'm not aware of any attack right now."
The strike
took place just hours after the Israeli premier convened his security
cabinet in Jerusalem on Thursday for a secret meeting, typically a sign
of imminent action, Reuters reported.

Israel Deploys Iron Dome to Defend Against Possible Syrian Retaliation

Two Iron Dome batteries were deployed in Safed and Haifa, as a result of tensions in the north.

Following an IDF evaluation of developments in the region, culminating in Israeli strikes on Syria – as confirmed by officials – Israel is bolstering protective measures in preparation for possible retaliatory rocket fire.

Meanwhile, Lebanese official news agency reported Sunday that Lebanon army and UNIFIL forces have increased patrols in the area.

Lebanon is set to file a complaint against Israel with the UN Security Council citing “repeated violations perpetrated by Israel, whose planes penetrate the country’s aerial spaces.”
