A technical manufacturing facility of the Syrian Army was one of the targets of a missile attack on the coastal city of Latakia Monday evening. One Syrian security source told Sputnik News many of the missiles were repelled by the country's air defense system.
"Syria's air defense systems have responded to an air attack in Latakia. Most likely there were drones and missiles involved," Sputnik News' source said. Syrian state media and Arabic TV channel Al Mayadeen reported that the attack came from the sea. 
Syria journalist Leith Abou Fadel reports that some missiles hit parts of the city, and power outages were reported resulting from the blasts were reported by social media users. One of Fadel's sources in the Syrian Army says that the missiles were shot by armed drones and were not airstrikes.
A Syrian human rights group later told Sputnik that seven people had been injured in the attack. 

Blasts have also been reported in the city of Baniyas, which is to the south of Latakia on the coast.

Even further to the south, in the city of Tartus, another explosion was reported overhead. 

According to the Within Syria blog, two military bases near Latakia were hit.

Some reports say that the attacks were launched by Israel while others point the finger at Islamist rebels. Israel has been accused of attacking Latakia in the past.
The attack follows a deal struck between Russia and Turkey over a partial demilitarization of the Idlib province, the last remaining stronghold of anti-government extremists and al-Qaeda-linked groups in Syria.

Massive Sustained Attack On Syria: Russian S-400 Defenses Possibly Active In Huge Escalation

Another attack on Syria has occurred tonight on multiple locations in what is the largest sustained series of what are believed to be Israeli or possibly US air strikes in months. But hugely significant is that early reports suggest Russia's S-400 anti-missile missile defense system engaged the inbound rockets. 
On Monday night Syrian state-run SANA confirmed multiple missiles fired "from the sea into Lattakia city" in "an aggression from unknown source" which state media says involved successful intercepts by Syrian missile defense.
British-Syrian journalist Danny Makki, currently reporting from the ground, says the attack "lasted for a total of 1 hour 30 minutes" and missiles soared over four cities including Latakia, Tartus, Homs and Hama — with rockets and explosions lighting up the sky especially over the coastal towns. 
Though it appears another Israeli strike - as it came less than two days following an attack near Damascus - the details are still unknown, and some observers are speculating it could be an American attack, given that at least some of the missiles were fired from the sea.

SANA reports "an aggression on Lattakia has targeted the Technical Industries’ establishment" adding that "the air defenses intercepted and downed a number of the missiles".
Multiple journalists in the region further said that Syrian air defenses were activated across four provinces including Latakia and Tartus on the coast, as well as over Homs and Hama which are more inland. 
The initial major strike on Latakia, located on the Syrian coast, reportedly targeted a Syrian Scientific Research Center (SSRC) facility, and newly published video and images from Syrian sources show massive fireballs lighting up the sky.

But significantly the location of the strike is in the vicinity of Russia's Hmeymim airbase, and there are early unconfirmed reports that Russia engaged the inbound assault via its advanced S-400 system. 
According to the Middle East Institute's Charles Lister, "Reports suggest Russia air defenses in Hmeymim participated in attempting to repel tonight’s strikes in Latakia." 
Lister continued, "*IF* that’s true, that’d be a significant development. Some reports also say strikes came from sea; leading to accusations of a U.S naval cruise missile attack."

Unconfirmed local eyewitness accounts say that two hostile aircraft were shot down during the lengthy assault. 
A number of videos are circulating on Syrian social media which purport to show successful Syria or Russian missile defense intercepts during the sustained attacks.

As yet, there's been no confirmation of who carried out the attack; however, a report early this month cited Tel Aviv sources who confirmed that Israel's Air Force has conducted 200 attacks on locations inside Syria over the course of the past 2 years alone, according to Reuters.
The major escalation comes just after Russia's Vladimir Putin and his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan met Monday to announce that a demilitarized zone in the Idlib will be formed by October 15.

Turkey is placing its reputation on the line, in promising to control al Qaeda.
The real reason is Trump, Manfort turning on him, the elections coming up, Trump was expected to push Russia into sinking an American ship and using its air defenses against American planes as well.
Trump was planning on attacking Russian forces, or so our sources tell us, in order to push a panic that could save him.

This deal with Turkey is important.  If Russia and Turkey can make this work, it isn’t so much about Syria as hurting America.

Russian President Vladimir Putin and his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan have met in Sochi, where they discussed the situation in Syria’s Idlib province, one of the remaining pockets of insurgency in the Arab Republic.
Following the talks between Putin and Erdogan, Russian Minister of Defense Sergey Shoigu announced that Russia would not conduct a military operation in Idlib.
“In the next few hours we will coordinate all the issues set forth in this document with them [Damascus authorities],” Shoigu told reporters showing the memorandum on Idlib settlement signed by him and his Turkish counterpart, Hulusi Akar.
The meeting comes a little over a week after the Russia-Turkey-Iran summit in Tehran, where the ceasefire guarantor states focused on the question of the Idlib de-escalation zone and ways to minimize risks for the civilian population related to the counterterrorism struggle.
Demilitarized Zone in Idlib
Earlier in the day, Vladimir Putin stated that Moscow and Ankara would establish a demilitarized zone along the contact line between the armed opposition and Syrian troops, which would be controlled by Turkey and Russian military police.

The Russian president added that the Syrian leadership would soon hold consultations on a settlement in the region.
Erdogan, in turn, stressed that everything possible would be done in order to get rid of radical groups in Idlib.
“During the talks with Mr. Putin, we agreed that it is necessary to solve the Idlib issue. Territories that are under control of the Syrian opposition must be demilitarized. The opposition that controls these territories will remain there, but at the same time, together with Russia, we will take every effort to eliminate all radical groups from these territories. We will make every effort to do this,” Erdogan said.
