Roughly 2,200 aftershocks have shuddered Nevada in the week since the state's largest earthquake in 66 years, a magnitude 6.5 temblor that struck near Tonopah last Friday.
Of those 2,200 quakes, 237 were above a magnitude 3.0, and 31 measured 4.0 or above. The three largest crested magnitude 5.0.
"Those are large aftershocks," said Jayne Bormann, a geophysicist and project manager at the Nevada Seismological Lab. "Once you get above a magnitude 5.0, they have the potential to be damaging."
The earthquake sequence continues to shake the Monte Cristo mountains in what Bormann described as a "productive" aftershock sequence, meaning it's not just producing a lot of aftershocks, it's also producing strong ones.
