… The temptation to bring down revolution-infected Ukraine is no longer checked by worries about responses coming from the incapacitated West; and partaking in a counter-revolutionary dismemberment of the closest of neighbors will deny Russia a chance for a peaceful post-Putin transition.
The second avenue of decision-making goes through Russia, and the impact of the Ukrainian revolution on the domestic situation is difficult to evaluate. Still, Putin is inclined to believe in the worst possible spill-over (http://echo.msk.ru/blog/nemtsov_boris/1264336-echo/). In order to minimize this “contamination,” he might find it necessary to demonstrate that nothing good comes out of the riot executed by Western-sponsored extremists against legitimate authorities—and that bodes ill for the stabilization of tumultuous Ukraine. His nervous courtiers might also try to unleash a new round of repressions against the liberal opposition—particularly now that the order for Russia to be on its best behavior for the Sochi Olympics has expired (Novaya Gazeta, February 22). In the last week, Putin has quietly executed a series of purges among the security services personnel (siloviki), seeking to reinvigorate their loyalty (Moskovsky Komsomolets, February 22).

Those tracking the developments in the Ukraine, and specifically the Russian response to this weekend's coup, will be interested to note that according to the Russian flot.com website, the large landing ship Nikolai Filchenkov, previously known for its participation in the Syrian naval arms build up, is expected to arrive in the Crimean port of Sevastopol carrying 200 armed soldiers, sent from the nearby Black Sea town of Temryuk.

From Flot.com

Today at 12:00 from the Russian port of Temryuk should arrive in Sevastopol, the large landing ship "Nikolai Fil'chenkov" with 200 soldiers on board. This was reported today by the chairman of the Ukraine "Freedom" faction Oleg Tyagnibok citing sources in the Crimean.

"I can show you the text message" - said Tyahnibok and read: "Today at 12:00 is expected the arrival from the port of Temryuk in the Russian Federation in the city of Sevastopol large landing ship Nikolai Fil'chenkov from the Black Sea Fleet of the Russian Federation. It will bring about 200 armed soldiers from the 328th Marine battalion, who are based in Temryuk and 10 BTR-80."

He also noted that "on February 22-23, ... IL-76 flights airlifted from Kubinka (Moscow region) to Anapa, personnel from the 45th Airborne Special Forces unit and additional divisions were relocated via four Il-76 flights from Pskov to Anapa. And from Sochi to Anapa were transported six Mi-8 helicopsters"- said Tyahnibok.
This appears to not be an isolated move as the naval build up seems to be escalating. In a concurrent release, Izvestia Kiev reported that out of Kubinka, four ships carrying special forces, are being relocated to Anapa. From there, in four hours, they will depart fo Sevastopol at a speed of 10-15 knots, citing "Izvestia in Ukraine" as a source. According to the source, the redeployment is "qualitative, not quantitative" and that the Ukraine is following these developments.

It remains to be seen if the Ukraine, or its brand new NATO BFFs, will respond in kind.

US and EU Waging “New Type of War” Against Russia

Russian general urges his government to wise up to the threat on its borders

Gen. Leonid Ivashov: US and EU threatening Russia with “a new type of war” that begins as informational and psychological operations. Photo: Axis for Peace
On February 5 a Russian news website, KM.ru, posted an interview with Gen. Leonid Ivashov, the former foreign relations head of the Russian Ministry of Defense and current president of the Academy of Geopolitical Studies. The interview was completely ignored by the corporate media in the United States and Europe due to its frank examination of the EuroMaidan revolution in Ukraine and the role played by Obama’s State Department and EU ministers in overthrowing the democratically elected government of President Viktor Yanukovych.
Ivashov said the conflicts in Ukraine and Syria represent “a new type of war” that begin as informational and psychological operations. EU officials and Secretary of State John Kerry, Ivashov said, “very conscientiously and scrupulously studied and continue to study the doctrine of Dr. Goebbels,” the Reich Minister of Propaganda in Nazi Germany. “If you tell a lie big enough and keep repeating it, people will eventually come to believe it,” Goebbels said, expanding on Hitler’s definition of the Big Lie.
“I think our Foreign Ministry does not understand that there is a war, and the war has its own laws,” Ivashov explained. The new war has an “anti-Russian orientation,” but this is not fully understood by the Russian Foreign Ministry. If it was, Russia would present the facts “as they are” and the real agenda of the United States and the European Union would be exposed.
The Syrian and Ukraine interventions, Ivashov said, are controlled from Brussels, the headquarters of the EU. “They make plans, carry out a coordinating function, provide installation and finance. This is true for Syria, and with regard to Ukraine.”
Moreover, what Obama and Kerry have “encouraged in Kiev” – violent demonstrations where armed paramilitaries target police – would be “severely repressed” in the United States. “European leaders have dispersed unauthorized demonstrations using water cannons and demonstrators are imprisoned. But they hold the opposite position in the case of Ukraine.”
In the United States, for instance, the government conspired to undermine the non-violent Occupy Wall Street movement and went so far as to target leaders of the movement for assassination. The effort to demonize and attack the political opposition in the United States spans decades, most notably under the aegis of the FBI, America’s political police, and its COINTELPRO operation.

Russia To Add “Stealth” Subs To Mediterranean Force

Zero Hedge
February 24, 2014
Many have been surprised by the lack of public response by Russia to the ongoings in Ukraine. Aside from some comments by Siluanov, the response has been concerning in its absence from the iron fist. However, quietly and with little new coverage, RiaNovosti reports that the combat capability of Russia’s naval task force in the Mediterranean will increase significantly – for the first time in decades – following the first deliveries of Varshavyanka-class submarines (with advanced stealth technology dubbed “black holes in the ocean”) to the Black Sea Fleet.
Via RiaNovosti,
Russia formed a permanent naval task force in the Mediterranean last year to defend its interests in the region. The move was widely seen, however, as a response to calls for international intervention in the worsening civil war in Syria, Russia’s longtime ally.
The task force currently consists of 12 warships and auxiliary vessels, including the nuclear-powered missile cruiser Pyotr Veliky and aircraft carrier Admiral Kuznetsov.

According to Chirkov, the Russian warships are taking part in an international operation to remove chemical weapons stockpiles from Syria.
“In general, the tasks assigned to the Mediterranean group are absolutely clear: to thwart any threat to Russia’s borders and security,” the admiral said, adding that it is normal practice for any country to keep naval assets in vital regions around the globe.
A D V E R T I S E M E N T
Chirkov said that the first Varshavyanka-class diesel-electric submarine, the Novorossiisk, will join the Black Sea Fleet in 2015.

The Defense Ministry has ordered a total of six Varshavyanka-class subs, dubbed “black holes in the ocean” by the US Navy because they are nearly undetectable when submerged.

The Varshavyanka-class (Project 636) is an improved version of the Kilo-class submarines and features advanced stealth technology, extended combat range and the ability to strike land, surface and underwater targets.
The submarines are mainly intended for anti-shipping and anti-submarine missions in relatively shallow waters.

The Black Sea Fleet has not received new submarines for decades and currently operates only one boat: the Kilo-class Alrosa, which joined the navy in 1990.

U.S. warns Russia to keep its military out of Ukraine

Guy Taylor and Valerie Richardson
The Washington Times
February 24, 2014
The Obama administration warned Russian President Vladimir Putin on Sunday not to react too aggressively to the fast-moving developments in Ukraine, where pro-Western demonstrators forced the nation’s Moscow-backed president from power over the weekend.
National Security Adviser Susan E. Rice said the situation unfolding in Kiev “reflects the will of the Ukrainian people and the interests of the United States and Europe,” and that Russia would be making a “grave mistake” if it sends in military forces to try to reverse the developments — or to seize control of pro-Moscow eastern Ukraine.
The Putin government has shown no outward signs that it is considering such a move. But with Ukraine’s interim government signaling its desire Sunday to quickly put the nation back on course toward Western integration, it was uncertain how far Mr. Putin would be willing to go to save face in a conflict that he had, until recently, appeared to be winning in the former Soviet republic.
Ms. Rice, who appeared Sunday on NBC’s “Meet the Press,” resisted the notion that Moscow and Washington were locked in a kind of Cold War-era standoff over Ukraine. However, other top players in the Obama administration seemed to be working behind the scenes to hammer home a message to Moscow that Washington will not tolerate any Russian aggression in Ukraine.

Did Susan Rice Just Threaten Russia With War?

Daniel McAdams
Lew Rockwell Blog
February 24, 2014
The US and EU got its regime change in Ukraine (for now). The legal government has been overthrown by an armed mob in the streets. As in Egypt, where the military overthrow of the democratically-elected Morsi government was called by US Secretary of State John Kerry, “restoring democracy,” US officials are lining up to describe the coup in Ukraine in the most positive terms.
“Over time, this trajectory is a good one,” said US National Security Advisor Susan Rice.
US Ambassador to Ukraine Geoffrey Pyatt, who was caught on tape planning the overthrow of the Ukrainian government with US Assistant Secretary of State Victoria Nuland, described the fruits of his heretofore successful regime change operation as “thrilling, exhausting, but also inspiring.”
The democratically-elected Viktor Yanukovich is ousted — despite a US/EU-brokered deal — and his political party is about to be outlawed in a Ukrainian parliament that has tossed aside constitutional procedures and is operating in full revolution mode. In Yanukovich’s place has been installed — contrary to Ukrainian legal procedures — the former head of the KGB, Oleksandr Turchynov.
But that is not enough for Susan Rice (and her comrade-in-arms, Senator John McCain).
Asked today about the possibility that the Russian military might become involved in restoring the legal government in Ukraine, she warned: “That would be a grave mistake.”
Grave mistake? Is Susan Rice threatening US military action against Russia?
She continued, “It’s in nobody’s interest to see violence return and the situation escalate.” This after it was US support for the rebels in Ukraine that started the violence in the first place.
Fellow warmonger Sen. John McCain followed up Rice’s warning by stating that a message has been sent to Russian President Putin to butt out:
The message has to be sent to him (Putin) that let the Ukrainian people determine their own future…
He added that since we have bought Ukraine it was time to pay the freight:
[W]e need to act immediately to give them (Ukrainians) the economic assistance that they need, based on reforms that are going to be required, as well. So it’s going to be tough sledding.
Syria, Iran, Afghanistan, Ukraine, Russia. Has World War III just begun?
