An American doctor with doctors without borders, or one of the groups that helps impovershed areas.

"All ports of entry into Nigeria, including airports, seaports and land borders, are placed on red alert," Nigerian health minister Onyebuchi Chukwusaid said.

Ebola clinic under guard after 'cannibalistic ritual' claims

Police are having to guard an Ebola clinic in Sierra Leone after allegations by a former nurse that the virus was invented to conceal "cannibalistic rituals" there.

At least 660 people have died from the illness across Sierra Leone, Guinea, Liberia and Nigeria.

Amadu Sisi, a senior doctor at King Harman hospital in the capital Freetown, from which the patient was taken, said on Saturday that police found her in the house of a healer. Her family refused to hand her over and a struggle ensued with police, who finally retrieved her and sent her to hospital, he said. "She died in the ambulance on the way to another hospital," Sisi said.

And while the US public has been generally unaware of the severity of the breakout, this may soon change following news that a 33-year-old US doctor working for relief organization Samaritan's Purse in Liberia was the latest to test positive for the disease on Saturday.

"“This is very unusual, that we are not trusted,” said Marc Poncin, the emergency coordinator in Guinea for Doctors Without Borders, the main group fighting the disease here. “We’re not stopping the epidemic.”

Efforts to monitor it are grinding to a halt because of “intimidation,” he said. People appear to have more confidence in witch doctors.

Health officials say the epidemic is out of control, moving back and forth across the porous borders of Guinea and neighboring Sierra Leone and Liberia — often on the backs of the cheap motorcycles that ply the roads of this region of green hills and dense forest — infiltrating the lively open-air markets, overwhelming weak health facilities and decimating villages."
