Buried deep within National Institute of Health (NIH) studies is the alarming news that you are being turned into a zombie, right under your nose.  One study shows that incidental and intentional pharmacological odor delivery induce changes in your mood and cognition.  Odors can evoke contentedness and calmness or agitate.
Zombie Trigger Smell-300x118Your olfactory system is being exploited by commercial household and body-care enterprises.  Commercially available scents have been shown to affect memory, vigilance, pain perception, self-perception/confidence consumer decision making, and alertness.  These odors can be cleverly disguised, as in the case of the Hershey Chocolate Company, who takes odor manipulation to a new dimension as they in waft in chocolate aroma to seduce customers into buying inordinate amounts of their products.  This is a harmless example, but I bear witness that I came out with over $100 of chocolate.

There is a grave concern as odors can have a potentially pharmacological mechanism entering the bloodstream through inhalation.
Odors can also persuade us through our hedonically driven emotions driving us through odor to engage in activities that we would otherwise not participate.
One hypothesis by researchers our reaction to odors is purely psychological lured by a belief or expectancy in our minds.  An example might be coming home and smelling the aroma of fresh baked chocolate chip cookies.  You might think how delicious they will taste and forgo any desire to question are these chocolate chip cookies or they a synthetic concoction that smells like chocolate chip cookies but that I need to beware of.
Odors can have a specific effect upon us because we relate them to particular stimulus and moods that come from deep within our memory from learned experiences.
Exposure to a malodor can have a profoundly adverse affect upon our performance on a complex task such as proof-reading, but not a simple mental arithmetic task. Malodors can also have a detrimental impact on our drawing our attention away from serious environmental issues that might threaten us.
Maliciously deployed odors can have a negative effect on well being.

 Pharmacological Delivery System

Pharmacological properties of the odor can shock cognition Specific compounds in odors affect our olfactory nerve that works in coordination with our limbic system that is associated with cognition.    Studies show that when a person is inhales volatile compounds they enter the bloodstream as a neurological delivery system that can produce a drug-induced type trance.
Researchers have discovered that high and consistent does of an aromatic substance are necessary to achieve controlling behaviors.  Odors are being manipulated, as cues to persuade desired cognition, behaviors and moods.  A network of exacting tasks is being linked with particular scents.
Memory quality, memory tasks, word recall, spatial memory, numeric working memory, can effect by odors, delayed memory recall and delayed picture recall can all be influenced by the introduction of odor.
Exposure to Lavender can reduce stress markers in your saliva and is as powerful as the drug Valium due to its anti-anxiety effects upon the brain and body.
Every person has an odor threshold that can be influenced even well below the detection level suggesting that mood and cognition are not dependent upon a person smelling the odor.
Researchers are now exploring the time required for compounds to enter the blood system and cross the blood-brain barrier.  It is believed the amount of time to accomplish this is 20 minutes.
One researcher is evaluating, ” whether molecules that smell the same but are chemically different produce the same effects (or not)”.  This is critical to understand in these days where synthetic compounds are being introduced to us that odor and influence us as if they were the real compound.

 Odors & Emotion

As cognition decreases, a person will experience negative moods such as depression.  It is thought that odor pleasantness underpins cognitive facilitation.
The powerful impact of odors goes so far as to forge our facial expressions or lack thereof.  Negative odors lower the pitch of our voices reflecting our emotional state.   Our built-in alarm reflex is influenced by odor exposure as well as our memory content.
Vile odors increase both our heart-rate and skin concordance.
Researchers believe that past experience of odors and change our neural networks within the olfactory bulb.  This can have a produce a profound trigger between the experience, perception, emotion, and act after odor exposure.

 Do Zombies Feel Pain?

Researchers conducted experimental manipulation of pain by using olfactory stimuli via odor-induced changes in mood.  Repulsive odors generate greater the pain intensity.  It is thought that the odor exposure may activate the sympathetic nervous system, inducing stress, and accentuate the perception of pain.  One study showed that males exposed to a detestable odor had little influence of pain whereas females showed increased pain with unpleasant odors.

 Zombie State

You have probably experienced describing something and you become aware that the person to whom you are talking has a “deer-in-the-headlight” stare.  Odors can trigger these blank and mindless stares.  Smells can affect alertness and vigilance.  A relationship has been found between aroma identification and resistant watchfulness to sleep deprivation.  These two tasks involve frontal lobe activation.  Interestingly, the frontal lobe also activates in some seizures and in migraines.
Introduction of lavender (while a pleasant odor) has soporific effects.  EEG shows that exposure to lavender increased beta-power a marker of increased drowsiness.
Lavender works by influencing the cyclic adenosine monophoshate associated with sedation.  Speed at which persons exposed to lavender is significantly slower.  Lavender also attenuates deterioration of work and performance under conditions of fatigue.  Bergamot also reduces work production compared to peppermint or rosemary.

Complex Olfactory

The science of turning people into zombies via their olfactory system is a complex one especially when many chemicals and odors are present in an environment.  Millions, possibly billions of dollars, are being spent in the commercial, military, and government to zombify large segments of populations.  What is convincing is that zombie state that many of us encounter, if only shortly in a state of fatigue, may not be accidental but purposefully crafted by those who would seek to control us and rob us of our bodies and soul.

Good News

The good news is that we can each choose aromas from real spices, herbs, plants, and trees to mitigate influencing odors that we are encountering.  It is critical that to the degree we can we can we should avoid synthetic fragrances.  Using pure essential oils, and knowing how and what they can do for our mind and body, is key for a healthy body and mind.
