NASA’s Dawn spacecraft will arrive on the dwarf planet Ceres in our solar system’s asteroid belt on March 6. It will be the first spacecraft to explore a dwarf planet.
Ceres captured our attention last week as Dawn sent home images of strange bright lights on its surface. Ceres is the largest body in the asteroid belt between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter.

It's not often that NASA's own scientists are left scratching their heads. However when it comes to the dwarf planet Ceres, there's a lot to be confused about.
NASA's Dawn spacecraft has just captured some new close-up shots of the tiny planet showing what appear to be two bright lights on the surface.
And scientists have no idea what they are.
This is truly unexpected and still a mystery to us NASA scientists say
Ceres is the largest known object in the asteroid belt. Found between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter, astronomers have been keen to study the planet due to a belief that it could contain huge quantities of water.

WASHINGTON, March 7 (UPI) -- After more than seven years traveling, NASA's Dawn spacecraft has reached Ceres.
"NASA's Dawn spacecraft has become the first mission to achieve orbit around a dwarf planet. The spacecraft was approximately 38,000 miles (61,000 kilometers) from Ceres when it was captured by the dwarf planet's gravity," the space agency said in a statement.
Beyond being the first to orbit a dwarf planet, the spacecraft is also the first to orbit two extraterrestrial targets, NASA stated. It also orbited the giant asteroid Vesta, in the space between Mars and Jupiter, from 2011 to 2012.
