| Thanks for posting this. I had no idea they had seriously proposed a mandatory vaccination scheme and were taking comments, but once I saw this post, I wrote a letter. I've copied it below for anyone who wants to use the talking points in it though please don't copy it word for word since there is less impact if identical letters are received. In that case, they think it's a form letter and they discount the opinion expressed. - Quote :
Dear Senior Policy Adviser Fish: I most strongly am against any mandatory vaccination scheme, such as that proposed by the National Adult Immunization Plan (NAIP) for numerous reasons: First, vaccination is a medical treatment which carries numerous risks, including death. We do not force adults to undergo medical treatment; that is a matter of choice. Even when the choice concerns a life other than our own, such as in abortion, the law is on the side of choice. Informed consent is the standard for medical treatment and to enact legislation requiring vaccination violates that standard. Second, vaccinations are meant to be protective care. If someone believes in the efficacy of vaccination to protect them from whichever disease they are being inoculated against, then they have the right to take vaccinations. Forcing their neighbor to be inoculated also will not give the vaccinated person any more protection. Third, there is genuine dispute about the safety of vaccinations and their side-effects. The science is far from settled and since that is so, it is irresponsible for a government to force people to receive a medical treatment which could have disastrous effects on individuals. I believe this rush to vaccinate has occurred because of panic over the recent measles outbreaks. I would note that since 2005 there have been NO deaths attributable to measles in the US, but according to CDC statistics, 86 people have died from the vaccine, with another 2,000 people disabled. Fourth, studies from countries such as the UK demonstrate that inflammatory bowel disease is 13 times more common in people who have been vaccinated for measles; the risk of MS is 3 times greater for people vaccinated with the recombinant hepatitis B vaccine; cases of Type 1 diabetes in children under 14 is almost double in countries where the BCG vaccination against tuberculosis is used; in 1982 a paper was presented to the American Academy of Neurology revealing that 70% of SIDS deaths studied occurred within 3 weeks of pertussis vaccination; and numerous other studies reveal a higher incidence of various illnesses in those who have been vaccinated, as well as cases of brain inflammation and chronic brain damage arising from pertussis vaccination. All of this has been well documented. Fifth, there is good evidence that vaccination does not provide protection against numerous diseases. In the 2010 outbreak of whooping cough in California, over half of those who contracted the disease had been vaccinated. In Australia in 2009, 78% of those who contracted measles had been vaccinated against the disease, along with 84% of those who contracted whooping cough having been fully inoculated against that disease. There are other statistics from other years and other places, but this is enough evidence to raise questions about the efficacy of vaccination. Given all of this, it would be most irresponsible to require mandatory vaccination of any kind, for any age group. I hope that policymakers will make the right choice and not implement the NAIP scheme. Sincerely, | |
