Rise in Exorcisms and the Lure of Sexy Vampires

The Vatican is confirming a sharp rise in diabolic supernaturalism. Exorcist Cesare Truqui says that dioceses are experiencing a surge in reports of symptoms of possession. Some are even calling it the “Pope Francis effect” because of his frequent allusions to the devil.

The Argentinian pontiff’s fire-and-brimstone language and frequent references to the Devil have helped propel belief in Beelzebub back into the mainstream of the Catholic Church, where once it was an embarrassment.

Dioceses in the UK, Italy, Spain and elsewhere have noticed a dramatic increase in the number of people claiming to be possessed and have responded by training more priests in the dark arts of how to perform exorcisms.

Others like Professor Giuseppe Ferrari see a darker influence:

“There are those who try to turn people into vampires and make them drink other people’s blood, or encourage them to have special sexual relations to obtain special powers,”

Of course, he is responding to films like Twilight and TV shows like True Blood and The Vampire Diaries which often depict vampirism in an alluring manner. Many are unaware that the Bible actually might mention vampires.

The noun translated “leech” is the Hebrew termʿălûqâ which only occurs once in scripture. In Arabic there is a related word,ʿawleq, interpreted as referring to a kind of demon. Scholars have connected the terms see (Canaan, Taufik. Dämonenglaube Im Lande Der Bibel, 1929). Also a Phoenician amulet from Arslan Tash contains an incantation against a awleq identified as a ‘Blood-sucker.’
