Urfa was officially renamed Sanliurfa in 1984. According to Jewish and Muslim tradition, Urfa is Ur Kasdim, the hometown of Abraham, although this is disputed. It’s in the fertile crescent of the upper Euphrates-Tigris basin. Harran is 27 miles southeast of there.

The children of Kesed found a valley opposite to the land of Shinar. They built a city called Kesed, that is the land Kasdim or Kasi.

Ragu (Reu) took Ara, the daughter of Kesed’s son and she bare him Serug (Salah). Salah is Abraham's great grandfather.

The Early Aryan Kasi are referred to in Vedic literature as offerers of the sacred fire and the especial proteges of Indra. And in Babylonia the Kassi were ardent sun-worshippers and devotees of the Sun Cross such as the swastika, St. George's Cross, and the Maltese Cross.
