Deadly Cold Front Entering Lower 48 from Alaska - Cold Records to be smashed as Nation goes well below Zero Post by Newsroom - Dec 01, 2016
SEE LINK FOR NOAA PICTURE!!
A blast of Arctic air is in Alaska today and moving southeastward toward the lower 48 United States. As the cold moves, it will shatter 100 year records for bitter cold, all the way to New York City by next weekend, December 9 thru 11. Everywhere the cold mass travels will see temperatures about 36°F BELOW AVERAGE for this time of year! So if the typical "average" for your area this time of year is 30° you can expect to see Minus 6° F as the actual temperature.
PREPARE
Clothing: Persons should be preparing for this weather by making certain their summer and fall clothing is put away, and their winter clothing is out and ready for use. When you go out in this type of weather, wear LAYERS of clothing. The more layers the better because each layer helps keep heat in and cold out. Wear a hat!!!!!! Your brain needs - and gets -- the most blood flow in your body and your head is where a majority of your body heat escapes in the severe cold. Wearing a hat helps tremendously so do it!
Houses: Windows needing to be caulked should be done immediately to prevent drafts in homes and allow the caulking to dry for a day or two before the frigid weather arrives. Furnaces should be tested, fueled and their air filters cleaned or replaced with new filters. If your furnace is a steam boiler, make certain the water level in the furnace is high enough to make steam. If you have baseboard heat, vacuum out the baseboards to remove dust and cob webs. This will allow better air flow and heat distribution. Check the batteries in your smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors. Winter fires are common and you want your family alerted if things go wrong in the middle of the night. If you have a fireplace or wood burning stove, make certain the chimney is cleaned out before using the stove or fire place. Stack wood close to where it will be used to minimize effort carrying it back and forth. Once you light the fire, keep it lit. It's far better to keep the heat cranking than it is to catch-up after allowing the fire to go out.
Motor Vehicles: Vehicles should be checked for proper anti-freeze mix and radiator levels to avoid cracking engine blocks or blowing "freeze-out" plugs when the frigid air arrives. Tires tend to go soft when severe cold arrives, so check your tire pressure BEFORE using your vehicle in the morning and inflate the tires to the correct pressure. Is it time for new windshield wipers to deal with snow or sleet? Get it done! Do you have Jumper Cables in case your battery goes dead. Cold is tough on batteries, so having a set of jumper cables is a good idea. Pack a flash light with fresh batteries, and an Emergency blanket to keep warm if your break down. Chewable Granola bars or other such packaged food may be a good idea for a snack if you get stuck in the car somewhere.

Winter really IS coming: 'Siberian snow theory' predicts an early and brutal cold season for the US
Experts warn that increased snow cover in Siberia indicates cold temperatures are coming
It comes as frozen balls measuring almost 3 feet across have been found near the village of Nyda, Siberia
Snowballs formed in October when the Gulf of Ob rose up onto land and covered the beach in ice
As water retreated, the ice chunks rolled over and over in the snow, forming the giant snowballs
Snow cover in Siberia is now at around the highest level for this time of year since at least 1998
Experts foresee a harsher winter for much of the nation, including a return of the dreaded polar vortex

The United States could be in for a long, cold winter as snow cover in Siberia reaches its highest point for this time of year in decades, the father of the ‘Siberian Snow Theory’ has warned. Snow cover in Siberia is sometimes used to predict winter weather in the US, and MIT climatologist Judah Cohen claims this year’s conditions are a ‘textbook situation,’ Bloomberg reports. It’s thought that more snow in northern Eurasia signals the frigid temperatures set to hit the regions below. And while the cold blast could strike anywhere among North America, Asia, or Europe, the expert warns the US may get hit harder than forecasters are expecting. Scroll down for video

WINTER IS COMING: HOW POLAR VORTEX WILL HIT U.S.
For more than 30 years, the polar vortex has been weakening because of this sea-ice loss in the Arctic, which is linked to human induced climate change. When this happens, a piece of the vortex can surge to the southern part of the globe, which it then pushes Arctic cold into areas of North America and Europe. This is the event that happened in early 2014 and 2015, and some experts say the polar vortex is already on the move this year – which could be very troubling later on. According to the study, North America is expected to experience bitter temperatures beginning in the late winter and lasting until the early spring - from February to Mach. Adding to the claims, giant-sized snowballs have appeared along the Siberian coastline - which experts warn could have freezing consequences for the United States. The frozen balls, which each measure almost three feet across, stretch across an 11-mile section of coastline near the village of Nyda which sits above the Arctic Circle, according to Russian media.
A village administrator told The Siberian Times that the snowballs formed in late October when the Gulf of Ob rose up onto land and covered the beach in ice. As the water retreated, the remaining ice chunks rolled over creating snowballs which grew and grew in size until they hit gigantic proportions. Siberia is near record cold for this time of year, and snow cover is at around the highest level for this time of year since at least 1998. And the bizarre weather in the freezing Russian region could have consequences for the US, Mashable reports. Some meteorologists use Siberian snow cover levels in October to forecast how weather patterns will form across the United States. They believe the heavy early snow, could indicate heavier snowfall in parts of North America and Western Europe this winter.
Private weather forecasters foresee a harsher winter for much of the nation, including a return of the dreaded polar vortex, which funnels cold Arctic air into the US. Judah Cohen of Atmospheric and Environmental Research in Lexington, Massachusetts, forecasts an unusually cold winter for the eastern and middle two-thirds of the nation, especially raw east of the Mississippi River.

AccuWeather's data seems to agree with Cohen's prediction, as David Samuhel, senior meteorologist, told DailyMail.com that if the polar vortex hits it would be in January.
'We see the most below average temperatures in the north east during January, but they will only be about 1 or 2 degrees Fahrenheit below normal,' he said

Subject: The 2017 Farmers’ Almanac Fri Dec 02, 2016 1:41 am
The 2017 Farmers’ Almanac, which hit store shelves everywhere on August 15, 2016, forewarns that exceptionally cold, if not downright frigid weather will predominate over parts of the Northern Plains, Great Lakes, Midwest, Ohio Valley, the Middle Atlantic, Northeast, and New England this winter. The Farmers’ Almanac’s long-range weather predictions also suggest shots of very cold weather will periodically reach as far south as Florida and the Gulf Coast. In contrast, milder-than-normal temperatures will prevail over the Western States.
Novembrrrrr?
While winter officially starts on December 21, 2016, the Farmers’ Almanac predictions point to some snow and cold conditions in mid-November in the Northeast, Great Lakes, and Midwest. However, the good news is that the frigidly cold temperatures really won’t take hold until much later in the season.
Downright Frigid February
The Farmers’ Almanac, which breaks the country into 7 zones, and offers predictions for three-day intervals, forewarns of a mixed bag of wintry weather for both December and January. But it’s really February when the frigid temperatures take hold (northern tier states could see ambient air temperatures as low as 40 degrees below zero!). This is the month you want to make sure your heat works, your long johns are washed, and your slippers are nearby.
What about Snow?
Get the snow blowers ready in the East and umbrellas in the West! An active storm track will deliver above-normal precipitation to the Southeast, Northeast and New England states throughout most of the winter, especially February (see above!). In addition, another active storm track from the Pacific will deliver a dose of above-normal precipitation across the Western States. Meanwhile, near or below-normal precipitation will cover the nation’s midsection. (Find out how much snow is forecast for your region in 2017 Farmers’ Almanac.)

Northwest Braces For "Polar Plunge" As Temps Expected To Fall 35 Degrees Below Average
by Tyler Durden Dec 7, 2016 4:50 PM
As Al Gore's battle against the ever elusive ManBearPig rages on, forecasters with the national weather service are warning residents of the Northwestern United States to brace for severe record low temperatures of up to 35 degrees below average and extremely heavy snowfall.
Quote :
Of course, the winter storm expected to hit over the next couple of days will only add to the agony of those in Chicago who were already hit with the biggest "fall" snowstorm in 75 years. Per WJBC, O'Hare airport got 6.4 inches of snow on Sunday which passed the previous record of 4.8 inches set back in November 1940.
Quote :
State Climatologist Jim Angel said Sunday’s snowfall total was the heaviest snow accumulation for a fall-winter season’s first snow at O’Hare International Airport and likely other sites as well.
“It was the greatest first-of-the-season daily total for Chicago at O’Hare Airport,” Angel said. “That’s the biggest one-day jump to the winter snowfall season.”
Sunday’s 6.4 inches of snowfall at O’Hare blew past the old Chicago record of 4.8 inches in November of 1940.
Meanwhile, North Dakota families woke up this morning to massive levels of snow accumulation, 30-40 mph winds and temperatures of -30 degrees.
Per the following video from Weather Nation, 55-mph winds, combined with heavy snowfall, created white-out conditions across much of the state.
Per Weather.com, the onset of extreme winter weather was brought on courtesy of a huge jet stream of Arctic air that is expected to sweep across the entire country this week...
Quote :
It comes after it was forecast on Monday the arrival of massive cold wilds from the west started to push temperatures down from coast to coast.
'Frigid air from the depths of the Arctic will plunge into the United States as the jet stream (a fast-river of air along which storms travel) drops southward,' the online forecaster stated.
The freezing winds are expected to impact temperatures in the Midwest on Wednesday and Thursday, before the east coast cops it on Friday.
...bringing record low temperatures reaching nearly -30 degrees in certain areas...
...and snow accumulating to over 2 feet in certin parts of the Northwest all the way to Colorado.
And just because it seems appropriate, we conclude with Al Gore's epic warning of the "single biggest threat to our planet," global warming (aka ManBearPig).

Brrrr, only made it up to 63°F here today. Weather report says warming trend next week and to expect high temps around 67°F.
OK, y'all can start throwing over-ripe fruit and maters at me now.
For all its warts, Southern California does have its bright spots at times. Winter is one of them.

Bismarck in North Dakota is 25F colder than the North Pole this morning with experts warning its going to be a lot worse next week!
This morning at 9.am UST, Bismarck North Dakota USA recorded a temperature of minus 32.5C, minus 26.5F, which is 25F colder the North Pole which recorded its temperature at minus 17.3C, minus 1F. These kinds of temperatures are brutal and with the blizzard conditions North Dakota has suffered this week it has been truly treacherous Brutal cold lingering across the northern Plains thanks to an invasion of Arctic air. On Wednesday night, Dickinson, North Dakota, experienced an AccuWeather Real Feel Temperature of minus 39, while in Casper, Wyoming, the actual temperature plummeted to minus 33. And it will get worse, if you thought it was cold in the US this week well, next week is going to be even colder as the polar vortex returns to North America. Reuter’s reports, forecasters are sending chills down some spines with a prediction that much of the northern half of the United States could see frigid weather next week similar to life-threatening lows the polar vortex brought to parts of the country in 2014.
How its looking for Canada and the US
Anticipation of a freezing blast began to build this week when weather maps and forecast models showed similarities between next week's system and one that developed in January 2014. The southward shift in the polar vortex in 2014 brought the Midwest some of its coldest weather in two decades. Icy conditions snarled travel and thousands of flights were cancelled or delayed. Frigid temperatures combined with gusting winds to create life-threatening wind chills as low as 60 degrees Fahrenheit below zero (minus 51 Celsius) that killed at least nine people.
The coldest weather next week is expected in the Midwest and North-eastern starting around Tuesday, according to forecasts that show temperatures in the single digits in some cities.
"The air mass on the way for the middle of December is likely to be substantially colder when compared to that of this past week and this weekend," AccuWeather meteorologist Paul Pastelok wrote on Thursday. http://www.thebigwobble.org/2016/12/bismarck-in-north-dakota-is-25f-colder.html
Temperatures from the Northern and Central plains to wide swathes of the Midwest are likely to drop by between 5 and 20 degrees Fahrenheit compared to temperatures this week, according to AccuWeather.
