I pray this thing will "stop" worsening eventually. Everyone needs to remember this large complex of salt dome caverns, like this one that has failed, is where the U.S.'s SPR (strategic petroleum reserves) are stored.

I'm going to post more soon. I went to a symposium shortly after Deepwater Horizon occurred where a professor from LSU & a couple of professors from here in FL explained geologically 'why' there was so much oil in the gulf region. Its chilling when you put it in the perspective of major earthchanges.

Edit to add: fyi the state of LA denotes this complex as #18.

U.S. Government Oil Stash Springs a Leak : Energy: Crude stored in salt cavern threatens to pollute Gulf of Mexico. It will be pumped out and sold at a loss.
August 08, 1995 From Associated Press

NEW ORLEANS — A plan to stash billions of gallons of crude oil in vast salt caverns as a hedge against another Arab embargo has turned into an expensive headache for the government.

One southern Louisiana cavern--a former salt mine--is leaking. Left alone long enough, it could release a flood of oil and pollute miles of swampy coastline where the Gulf of Mexico's crab, shrimp and fish breed.

Over the next two years, the Energy Department plans to pump out the 3 billion gallons of oil, paying for the operation by selling 10% of the oil at a $100-million loss.

Meanwhile, engineers are digging refrigerated wells to freeze the water that has been seeping into the salt mine and enlarging the leak. Everyone agrees that the oil must be pumped out, but environmentalists say it never should have been stored at Weeks Island--one of hundreds of subterranean salt mountains that poke their tips up into the swamps of southern Louisiana, Texas, Mississippi and Alabama. The amount of oil involved is 300 times the size of the Exxon Valdez disaster in 1989. "That loss was well documented in terms of the loss to wildlife and land," said Eric Huber of the Sierra Club Legal Defense Fund. The problem has its roots in the 1973 Arab oil embargo and the long lines at gasoline stations that the embargo created. The strategic petroleum reserve was created to store up to 31.5 billion gallons of crude oil in case of another crisis. Under the plan, about 25 billion gallons of oil has been stockpiled in six caverns in Texas and Louisiana at a cost of $4.5 billion.

Only the cavern at Weeks Island--two abandoned mine shafts the government bought from Morton Salt Co.--is leaking. Morton started mining the salt dome near New Iberia around the turn of the century and is still working most of it.

The government became aware of leaks after a 35-foot deep sinkhole was discovered on the Morton property in 1992. After they had studied it for a while, geologists realized that the mining had created tiny cracks in the mountain that let water seep into the salt cavern. If the seepage continues, the scientists said, the water may force out the oil and pollute the swamplands, Vermilion Bay and neighboring inlets into the gulf. "That area is a large nursery ground for shrimp, crabs and a lot of the fish species offshore. It is used a tremendous amount by commercial fishermen as well as recreational fishermen," said Wilma Subra of Subra Co., an environmental consulting firm in New Iberia.

FYI relative salt dome dynamics. If they become compromised down to their base it can spread. This pic isn't LA but its the best pic I could locate to illustrate the point.

Gov’t: Contaminants in giant sinkhole could spread to freshwater swampland — Benzene is entering groundwater — Damage to ‘Louisiana Coastal Zone’

quoting a commenter on ENE's board who knows what he's talking about:

"…triggered the release of crude oil and natural gas from deep sources outside the salt dome, allowing them to migrate into shallow areas underneath the Bayou Corne and Grand Bayou communities, presenting a risk of explosive gas accumulations…"

DEEP sources OUTSIDE the salt dome!! See?

The sinkhole is a SYMPTOM. It's not the main problem.

This video references the "salt" as a future incident.  I also saw in it a dual "salt" reference.  The "salt island" could be Japan (known historically for it's land of seasalt).  Could it mean "dual disaster"?  LA "SINK" hole and "SINK" an island?  Remember the ILL lum I NOT I card of "combined disaster"?  Same place hit 2x, but next time "clock" falls?  There was also a Japanese movie (opened 25 Aug 2006 - almost 7 yrs ago) called "Japan Sinks". (Pet Goat was out long before Sandy Hook too)

Ironic that you bring it up. I've had some pretty long discussions about different possibilities over the last few days. Not thinking in terms of the ill cards though but good point. Depending on where one lives many of these 'conspiracies' could mean the literal difference between life and death, at least in this temporary existence. I can't get the picture fixed but if you go to the geology link above it illustrates that most if not all of the salt domes are connected deep underground. They also extend into & or under the seabed. The radiation in Fukushima spilling into the Pacific is & will continue to desalinize the Pacific; which will desalinize all of the world's oceans. In theory, the oceans will try to self stabilize and draw in salt, i.e. possibly from the base layer of salt dome complexes. Who knows what role all the oil & corexit in the gulf can or would play as well?

Of course you then also have fracking & the New Madrid fault in play relative the salt domes. Its kind of like which came first: the chicken, the egg, or the omelet...

edit to add: www.dutchsinse.com is a good site relative the fracking. You'll have to scroll down a bit as he's on a tirade right now. A Hollywood movie guy's son spearheaded a complaint movement to have his video's pulled and he's about to give himself an aneurysm over it. Anyway he gives examples of earthquake location & details, pulls it up on google earth and shows that the eq is located virtually directly under a fracking site, many of which have never seen any eq activity before.

I've yapped on & on about the potential severity of this situation. Literally, 'just up the street a bit' from the American Strategic Petroleum Reserves. Obviously there's a significant media blackout on this.

Here is an intact salt cavern rendering:

L.A. Sinkhole “taken on a volcano-like quality” SaltDomeComplarge

The 'sinkhole' cavern is now 4,097 feet deep, full of water & various petroleum products.

http://assumptionla.wordpress.com/2013/10/21/130-p-m-update/

Obviously it doesn't technically qualify as a 'lake', but if it did it would the 3rd deepest lake in the world.
