| Well... um.... Good list. I'll leave the sponge one alone. Good luck with that one. ^-^ Sugar in a wound? Doesn't sound right to me. Just good ol plain soap and water is good to wash a wound out with.
65. If you have something in your eye fill a plastic cup to the top with water. Hold it up to your eye and blink repeatedly while applying a small amount of pressure to the sides of the cup so that the water rises slightly up to your eye. Blink away.
66. If a small child has put something up there nose. Push the nostril that is open shut with your finger and give one large breath in their mouth. Because they do not need mouth to mouth the forced air will come out the nostril that is plugged forcing the object out of their nose. (learned this trick from a nursing friend and then a week later had to use it on my son who shoved a large bead up his nose. Saved me a trip to the emergency room.)

| Raw honey is supposed to be good on wounds to help healing. But sugar? I've heard it makes a good facial scrub.
And I can second the Krazy Glue.

| Maggots in a wound??? Ugh... no thanks. I'm going to have to be dying in the Amazon before I try that one. Proskuneo, thank you for the directions for dislodging objects in children's noses. My son did that more times than I care to remember - and every time required a trip to the ER. However, I have heard from an unusual source (Alton Brown) that honey is good for wound care. It is anhydrous - it draws moisture from the bodies of bacteria so they can't set up in the wound. Honey made from tea tree oil in Australia (or is it New Zealand) has been proven to be highly effective against the flesh-eating bacteria that plagues hospital patients - more effective than antibiotics. Garlic has also been proven to be one of the most effective, if not the most effective, antibiotic and anti fungal in the world - without all the side effects. I have used a tincture of garlic, oregano and sage to keep flu at bay for years and it has worked for everyone in my family. Dandelions are a gift from God. Every part of the plant is edible, and are high in iron and vitamin C. Just make sure that it hasn't been sprayed (don't harvest near roadways). Plantain is another plant that is highly useful in areas where poison ivy and poison oak are prevalent. Wash the area with soap because the irritation is carried in an oil that will spread to other areas if left alone. Then, put a plantain salve if you have it or simply place a ripped up (or chewed up in a pinch) leaf of plantain on the affected area. This also works for insect stings. The plantain will soothe the skin almost immediately and stop further irritation. Plantain usually grows within 10 feet of poison ivy or poison oak - God puts the antidote near. Again, be careful to harvest leaves from areas that have not been sprayed with chemicals or exposed to toxins. |

| Thanks Spring and all, there are some very helpful tips here.
I can attest for the Tea Tree (Manuka) Raw Honey. It will clear up an infection over night and speed up wound healing. It's a fabulous thing to keep in your first aid kit. |

| Basil is GREAT for chiggers and mosquito bites. I just fold up a leaf and bite it a couple of times to break it and then rub it on the bite for a few minutes. this works amazingly well on my hubby, he gets scars from chiggers but If I do this, they don't even itch and go away quickly. You have to rub it well or juice some leaves to get the green juice out. I also use pesto for this. The added garlic helps too and it keeps through the winter. I've found regular large leaf basil works the best. | |

To keep chiggers, ticks, etc. away in the first place use good old fashion sulphur (or sulfur). I have sulfur in my kit and I still use it in spring and summer when the bugs are bad. Chiggers like those tight areas around the elastic in socks, underwear, etc. and a light dusting of sulfur keeps 'em away. Even though you'll smell like a strike anywhere match you'll be bug free. !! Amazon. I bought three pounds for very little money a few years ago. Drugstores used to carry it but no longer. Sulfur is sulfur so don't pay more money for some fancy sublimated or organic or medical grade whatever. http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss_1?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=sulfur+powder

Better to smell like you're a match than burn like one when the buggers have had you. We use sulphur in FL as well to keep the "no see ums" off of us. Nasty little things. A little bit of neem oil works well too. Did anyone actually PROVE ddt is as bad as they claim or is that another Monsanto lobby effort?

http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss_1?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=sulfur+powder Ordered some! We are almost carried away by mosquitoes this time of year near the lakes. The only thing thus far that has stopped them is actually standing in the smoke of the fire. I hope this works with mosquitoes - the Kentucky state bird! |
