| Cloning People Will Happen Should we clone people? Note that I didn’t prefix the question with, “If we could,” because sooner or later we’ll be able to do so. It’s a question of when, not if. And given the rapid changes in both the science and engineering of cloning, that time may be here faster than you think. Clones have been the stuff of science fiction for decades. For example, the replicants in the movie “Blade Runner” were advanced clones, nearly indistinguishable from humans. Their creators had genetically programmed the replicants to a shortened lifespan, which led to their rebellion. Ironically, the movie was based on the 1968 book, “Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?” by Philip K. Dick. Nearly 30 years later, sheep were in the news again when science fiction became science fact with the cloning of Dolly the sheep in Scotland in 1996. Dolly gave birth several times and lived a relatively normal life. From all outward appearances, she was a typical sheep. more http://www.floridatoday.com/article/20130517/COLUMNISTS0701/305170006/Scott-Tilley-Cloning-people-bound-happen?gcheck=1 |
