If you announced to the American public in 2019 that before the midpoint of the decade, we would have retreated from Afghanistan in defeat at the hands of the Taliban, & that we would cease to pursue death for the 9/11 plotters, the outrage would have been for the history books. If you had acknowledged that this was inevitable result of policy decisions by 2009, it would have changed history. But errors of strategic delusion must first blind foresight.
