AUSTRALIAN MISINFORMATION BILL COULD THREATEN FREE SPEECH
Australia’s new anti-misinformation bill aims to curb false information online, but the Human Rights Commission warns it might limit free speech by labeling differing opinions as “misinformation.”
While changes like focusing on “serious harm” have improved the bill, vague terms and reduced platform transparency remain issues.
Although a three-year review is planned, the Commission recommends an earlier review at 12 months and advises against passing the bill without further protections for free speech and clearer guidelines.
