Acapulco tourists stranded; Mexico death toll 38
ACAPULCO, Mexico (AP) — Emergency flights began arriving in Acapulco Tuesday to evacuate some of the tens of thousands of tourists stranded in the resort city by flooding and landslides that shut down the highway to Mexico City and swamped the international airport.
The death toll rose to 38 from the combined punch of Tropical Storm Manuel, which hit Acapulco and hundreds of miles of Mexico’s Pacific Coast, and Hurricane Ingrid, which battered the Gulf Coast over the weekend.

Federal officials said it could take at least another two days to open the main highway to Acapulco, which was hit by more than 13 landslides from surrounding hills, and to bring food and relief supplies into the city of more than 800,000 people.

Two of Mexico’s largest airlines, Aeromexico and Interjet, began running flights to and from the still-swamped international airport. Those with tickets got first priority, then families with small children or elderly members, officials said.

Though the government would like us to believe there is rarely looting or panic in the aftermath of a disaster, the fact of the matter is that within 72 hours of any serious crisis people will lose it.

Case in point: Acapulco, Mexico.

This week flood waters and landslides ravaged the resort town of Acapulco and stranded a reported 40,000 tourists, leaving them without food, water, or any means of escape. Major roadways into and out of Acapulco have been blocked by debris, cutting off recovery efforts for the city’s 680,000 residents.

With the city devoid of law and order, and emergency responders overwhelmed, looters hit the streets in a matter of hours.

You’d think that those who failed to prepare for the possibility of a disaster would be out looking to acquire extra food, fresh drinking water and supplies, but apparently, as we saw in the immediate aftermath of Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans, electronics and other consumer goods were the order of the day:

Back in town, thousands of looters streamed out of the Costco wholesale store in the exclusive Diamante district, wading out of the flooded store with food, televisions and even fridges while soldiers and federal police looked on, AFP correspondents said.

Other looters broke glass doors to enter shops in two malls, snatching home appliances and mattresses.

“We can’t stop them. We are in a serious emergency situation,” a soldier said, declining to give his name.

Good (BAD) link spring.

Regrettably, as mentioned prior, if you're an American stranded down there your cries for help are met with State's (hypothetical) response of:

"You've chosen to frequent a country on the Do Not Travel list. Whilst we hope you return safely we will collect whatever's left of your wealth via the inheritance tax as well as audit your children to make certain you paid your fair share in life, as well as in death. We'll seize whatever we see fit to fund the not so affordable care act which funds the murder of unborn children and pad the coffers of lobbyists for everything evil."

Hasta Luego!!
