Tense Moment as Senator Calls for Sebelius to Resign
Associated Press
Senate Finance Committee member Sen. Pat Roberts (R., Kan.) questions Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius on Wednesday.
One particularly tense moment at the Senate Finance Committee hearing Wednesday morning with Health and Human Services Secretary
Kathleen Sebelius came when Kansas Republican Senator
Pat Roberts called for her resignation again.
He spoke at length during the hearing, expressing his disappointment at the lack of information provided to Congress throughout the website’s development – including some warnings of problems ahead by government investigators.
“In short, Madam Secretary, I believe you were given advice, counsel and warning from experts inside your agency and out that the health care exchanges were not going to be ready.
Furthermore, I believe to protect the administration, you chose to ignore these warnings, and as a result, you have put our entire health care system and one-sixth of our economy in jeopardy.” (See the CSPAN clip.)
“You have said America should hold you for — accountable, which is why today, Madam Secretary, I repeat my request for you to resign,” he said.Mrs. Sebelius looked stony-faced throughout Sen. Roberts’s comments. She didn’t respond.
He first called for her resignation last month in a statement. This time he did it to her face.
It was a particularly cringe-worthy moment as Mrs. Sebelius, a former governor of Kansas, and Sen. Roberts are old family friends. Early in his career, Mr. Roberts worked for the late Rep. Keith Sebelius, who was Mrs. Sebelius’s father in law.
It’s worth noting that Sen. Roberts is up for re-election in 2014. Last month, Sen. Roberts gained a primary challenger, in Milton Wolf, a Kansas radiologist with ties to the tea party.
