Arkansas Democrat-Gazette, Dec. 9, 2013 at 11:45a ET: Arkansas Department of Emergency Management spokesman Tommy Jackson said that the fire had not extinguished within the 15 minutes of detection. “The auxiliary transformer exploded in Unit Two, and there was fire within the protected area,” he said.

River Valley Leader, Dec. 9, 2013 at 3:31p ET: The Nuclear Regulatory Commission has activated its incident response center in Arlington, Texas, following the declaration of an Unusual Event at the Arkansas Nuclear One nuclear power plant. River Valley Leader, Dec. 9, 2013 at 3:28p ET: [...] reports of an explosion at Arkansas Nuclear One were received by Pope County 911 dispatchers. The explosion that was later determined to be atransformer blowing, caused a fire to erupt in the nuclear facility.
KUAR, Dec. 9, 2013 at 1:29p ET: “The issue was that the transformer itself contains oil. [...] the respondersmade the decision to let the oil fire burn off,” says [Entergy spokesman Mike Bowling].
Russelville Courier, Dec. 9, 2013 at 10:17a ET: Operators will keep the Unit 2 reactor offline while the cause of the explosion is investigated and a determination is made on what repairs are necessary. [ANO spokesperson Donna Gregory] said it has not yet been determined how long the unit will remain offline. Currently there is an investigation into the cause of the fire and extent of damage.

Dunno, those transformers, at least the first series in line after the generators are pretty huge. If one or more really blew its top that very well could shake the ground some. Let's all hope and pray that's what really happened. Last thing we need is another Fukushima.

Look at the size of those things ! ! !   down

I'm having internet issues, but plz refer to the map I replied to recently in one of springs' threads. AR1 is a fairly decently engineered PWR. Transformers & what not blowing has absolute zero effect or relationship with the reactor itself from a technical standpoint, but there is something not being revealed & or discussed if they've SCRAM'd the unit.

External power could be an issue if lost long enough... this is why all those power grid down drills... they are worried about that situation where a reactor loses outside power for longer than they have fuel for generators, if generators to supply emergency power run out of fuel it will be bad if they don't go into power down mode right away.

For the life of me I cannot understand why they wanted to rely on outside power for controls... and generators..
I did report some time ago about the Testing of the Generators... an outside contractor is required to do periodic tests.. to sign off that they work properly.
The one doing the inspecting said that multiple generators at each site failed as in broken crank shafts... that means major breakdown!! not something simply fixed by part purchase down the street!!!
It almost sounded like engineered failure to cause melt down.. but that is just me .. knowing what we know about the plans of the bad ones today... old ready to fail plants and failing safety systems is not good!!!

The PWR's were engineered to be self-sustainable, if need be. They don't need external power. Whatever was/is having trouble is essential to energy transmission elsewhere, but does not necessarily reflect a problem within the reactor unit(s).  Like the article says, you more than likely have an oil fire of sorts.
