OUTRAGE! Father Arrested After Complaining About Risqué Common Core Assignment Parent-Arrest-Opposing-Common-Core
The backlash of some school districts against parents who oppose Common Core curriculum is getting out of control. (watch video below) In September 2013, a parent in Maryland was arrested at a school board meeting after his vocal opposition to Common Core. At that time, The Blaze reported on the incident.

Quote :
Robert Small, a concerned father, was forcefully removed from the meeting by a police officer after he interrupted Baltimore County Schools Superintendent Dallas Dance during the question-and-answer portion of the forum.
The meeting apparently didn’t allow parents to stand up and ask questions or comment. Parents and other attendants were instead asked to write their questions on a piece of paper and officials would read them
However, Small began speaking out against the district’s use of Common Core, prompting a security guard, who was also a police officer, to approach him and order him to leave. “Let’s go!” he said sternly.
Small was charged with second-degree assault of a police officer and faced a $2500 fine and 10 years in prison. While the charges were eventually dropped, the fact that something like that even happened is startling.
Recently, a similar incident occurred in Gilford, NH. The school district assigned book “Nineteen Minutes,” by author Jodi Picoult to freshman students. The book contained very questionable material, including graphic sexual content. The district failed to notify the parents of the controversial nature of the book prior to students reading it. A notice was sent out late, but by then, the damage was done.
Just like in Maryland last year, the school district exerted far too much force in response to a father’s opposition to the assignment, having him arrested for violating the two-minute rule for speaking at the board meeting. The Union Correspondent reported on this event that has sparked outrage.
Quote :
William Baer, whose ninth-grade daughter last week was assigned the book “Nineteen Minutes,” published in 2007 by bestselling author Jodi Picoult of Hanover, came to the meeting to protest the book’s assignment and the fact that the district forgot to send a notice home to parents about the assignment.
Baer stood and asked the Superintendent Kent Hemingway to read the notice to parents sent out Monday, which said the book “depicts high school relationships, some of which are unhealthy.”
Before speaking, Baer was told he had two minutes. He went beyond that time and sat down, but then got into an argument with another parent who approved of the book at the high school.
“So what is the remedy here?” Baer asked.
The board said it would not take questions on the matter.
“Why don’t you have me arrested then?” he asked, after which an officer arrested him and took him to the police station.
Shortly thereafter, a police officer walked up to Baer and asked him to stand up. The exchange leads one to wonder ‘is this really happening in America?’ The father was escorted out of the room and taken away in handcuffs. He has been charged with disorderly conduct.
Baer is an attorney and said that he, along with his wife, is very involved in the education of his children. He was furious when he found out about the sexually graphic content of the book that was assigned to his ninth grade, teenage daughter.
Sarah Carrigan, another parent of a boy who received the book as part of a reading assignment, sided with Baer saying, “I am utterly appalled that this book was in my son’s hands.”
The district did not apologize for its treatment of Baer, nor did officials apologize for their excessive use of force in response to Baer going over the district’s two-minute rule. The chair of the board, Sue Allen, did issue a statement apologizing not for the questionable content of the book and the district’s decision to expose teenagers to it, but rather focused on the failure to notify parents in advance. She said, “”The board apologizes for the discomfort of those impacted and for the failure of the School District to send home prior notice of assignment of the novel.”
