Plague of locusts afflicts Egypt

Swarm of Biblical proportions surprises local authorities and blankets the ground near Giza

An enormous swarm of locusts is plaguing Egypt in a development that agricultural authorities admitted they failed to predict.

Egyptian Agricultural Minister Salah Abad Almoman said the swarm, comprising an estimated 30 million insects, descended on Giza, near southern Cairo, where it is causing great damage, Maariv reported on Sunday.

“The armed forces and the Egyptian border units are trying to battle the swarm with various means at their disposal,” Almoman said, but the report did not detail what action was taken. The minister appealed to local residents to refrain from attempting to deal with the ravenous horde themselves.

“I ask the families living in the area afflicted with the swarm to not light car tires,” he said. “It doesn’t drive the locusts away, it only causes damage, and it could start a fire that will take human life.”

A ministry official said crop-spraying aircraft will be deployed to tackle the insects, which are a seasonal phenomenon in Egypt — albeit not in such large quantities.

Almoman said strong winds predicted for the coming days are expected to blow the insects in the direction of Saudi Arabia and the Red Sea.

Although winds usually take the insects past Israel, in 2004 a large swarm descended on Eilat and the surrounding area. It did not spread to the more fertile areas in the center and north of the country.

Swarms move to northern Egypt and Sudan

The Desert Locust situation continues to remain worrisome along both sides of the Red Sea where hoppers and adults are forming groups, small bands and swarms in northeast Sudan, southeast Egypt, on the Red Sea coast along both sides of the Sudan-Eritrea border, and on the northern Red Sea coast in Saudi Arabia. Some groups and swarms have moved out of these areas recently.

In Sudan, immature adult groups and swarms plus a few mature adult groups and swarms moved from the northeast, crossing the Nubian Desert, and reaching Abu Hamed on 13 February and the Nile Valley as far north as Dongola by the 23rd. Although control operations were immediately launched, damage was reported on winter crops and date palms. Hopper bands and swarms were also present on the southern coast.

In Egypt, immature adult groups and swarms moved north along the entire stretch of the Red Sea coast, reaching Ras Gareb (south of Suez) on 26 February. Other adult groups nearly reached the Nile Valley north of Aswan.

In Eritrea, at least one swarm arrived on the northern Red Sea coastal plains from adjacent border areas in Sudan on 22 February.

In Saudi Arabia, a few groups of immature adults and an immature swarm moved north in sub coastal areas towards Duba in the past few days. A second generation of breeding is underway on the northern coastal plains between Rabigh and Yenbo where hatching started a few days ago and new hopper groups and bands are forming. Hopper bands are present on the central coast near Lith.

Aerial and ground control operations continue in Sudan and Saudi Arabia while ground control operations are in progress in Egypt.

The current outbreak originated from breeding during the past summer in the interior of Sudan where adult groups and swarms formed and moved to southern Egypt and northeast Sudan in November. A few groups crossed the Red Sea to Saudi Arabia while several groups and swarms appeared in coastal areas on both sides of the Sudan-Eritrea border. First generation breeding occurred from November to January.

Desert locusts swarm into Egypt

More swarms are expected to form in northeast Sudan and southeast Egypt in coming weeks, especially as ecological conditions continue to be favourable for locust reproduction and breeding, the ministry said.

Meanwhile, the agriculture and land reclamation ministry is co-ordinating with the defence ministry to use two military planes as pesticide dusters.

It also set up a hotline to receive reports from farmers whose lands have been invaded by locusts, Salah Mouawad, head of the ministry’s agricultural services department, said Thursday.

“Control and surveying operations have been able to eliminate 80% of the desert locusts that came from Sudan last November and have attacked Egyptian territories,” he said, adding that locust control teams in past weeks cleared locusts from 95,000 acres of land, and are currently treating locust infestations in 17 areas across four provinces.

Swarms of migrating locusts invaded Egypt in 2005, damaging agricultural crops in both Upper and Lower Egypt. The Egyptian government reported at the time that as many as 40% of the country’s crops were lost as a result.

CONTROLLING LOCUST SWARMS

Mohamed Abdel Qader, head of the farmers union, said Egyptians must stamp out the “fierce attacks of the locust swarms as quickly as possible” before they ravage winter crops.

Farmers are worried about a repeat of the 2005 crisis and are forming committees to keep locust control teams updated about areas under attack, he said.

Locust swarms that invaded Egypt in previous decades swept in from eastern and western Sudan, some Yemeni valleys and Saudi Arabia.

Those swarms came in two colours, red and green, and they often migrated during their breeding season, said Sahar Yusuf, a researcher in agriculture and pest control affairs at Ain Shams University.

“Red locusts often do not attack crops because many have yet to mature, and they have fatty reserves [in their bodies] they rely on during their flight and migration,” she told Al-Shorfa.

“They nevertheless might attack crops if they are exposed to pesticides, which could induce unexpected reactions,” she said.

Since reproduction generally takes place before the spring season, the present locust invasion may last weeks, Yusuf said.

Aya Kamal, an entomology and agricultural pests researcher at Cairo University, said pesticides the authorities use to combat desert locusts “limit the damage but do not stop it”.

“To totally prevent locust damage, [crops] must be sprayed with chemical pesticides, but these are very harmful to human health and thus, the authorities in Egypt do not use them,” she added.

Pesticides must be sprayed by airplanes because locust swarms fly at a high altitude, she said.

Locust alert in Middle East as plague descends on Egypt and creates panic in Israel

Israel's Agriculture Ministry set up an emergency hotline and task force
The swarm is estimated to be made up of 30million insects
The infestation has been devastating crops in Egypt ahead of Passover

As swarms of locust devour Egyptian crops, the Middle East is bracing for the destructive bugs to migrate their way ahead of the Passover holiday.

A swarm of an estimated 30million insects has been devastating crops in Egypt, fuelling apocalyptic fears because of the infestation’s proximity to the Bible story of Passover in which a swarm of locusts, the eighth of ten plagues, is imposed on Egyptians by God for enslaving and abusing ancient Hebrews.

Israel’s Agriculture Ministry set up an emergency hotline today and urged residents to be vigilant in reporting sightings of the insects to prevent an outbreak.

Swarms descending: A swarm of an estimated 30million locust has descended on Egypt (including these insects seen over the Al-Mogattam district of Cairo) as Israel braces for the infestation to head their way

A special task force has also been set up to help farmers manage infestations.

The locusts pass through the country as part of their normal migration from north east Sudan to Saudi Arabia, the Egyptian Agriculture Ministry said, emphasising that Egypt was just ‘a transfer station’ for the locusts, which were in larger numbers this year.

As the insects descended on agricultural farms in Giza and in Cairo, causing significant damage, fears have been raised that they could spread to Israel.

Battle with the bugs: Residents in Cairo burn tyres to create black smoke to deter the locust settling there as Israel's Agriculture Ministry set up an emergency hotline and urged residents to be vigilant in reporting sightings of the insects

Passover plague: The bugs have fueled apocalyptic fears because of the infestation's proximity to the Bible story of Passover in which a swarm of locusts, the eighth of ten plagues, is imposed on Egyptians by God for enslaving and abusing ancient Hebrews

In a statement from the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations, the infestation was described as a ‘immature swarm’ which ‘appeared in the afternoon (on March 2) in the eastern Cairo districts of New Cairo and Mokattam and dispersed into several smaller swarmlets’.

The statement read: ‘The locusts originated from breeding that has been in progress since November in southeast Egypt between Berenice and the Sudanese border.

Killing crops: As the locusts have descended on agricultural farms in Giza and in Cairo, they have caused significant damage to agriculture

‘As vegetation dried out, small groups and swarms of immature adults moved slowly north along the Red Sea coast, reaching Marsa Alam on 8 February, Hurghada on the 16th and Zafarana on the 26th.’

As well as Israel, Lebanon and Jordan have been alerted.

In Cairo, people were burning tyres to create black smoke to deter the locust from settling and there were reports that swarms had been seen in Zafarana, about 124 miles from Cairo, on the Red Sea and in the city of Qena, where the insects have been sighted in at least three villages.

According to the Israel National News, the Egyptian Agriculture Minister Dr Salah Abd Al Mamon said: ‘Egyptian armed forces and border guards are attempting to fight the swarm with all means at their disposal.

‘I ask the families living in the locust-plagues areas not to burn tyres. This does not chase away the locusts, but only causes damage and could ignite largescale fires that would cost in lives.’

He said that strong winds were predicted in weather forecasts and he hoped that this would force the insects to migrate toward the Red Sea and Saudi Arabia. Crop duster planes were also going to be used to handle the infestation.

Egypt and Israel was infested with locust in 2004. Israeli agriculture officials sent crop dusters into the air to spray against the locusts that swept in from North Africa in the first such invasion since 1959.

The Egyptian Agriculture Ministry said that the locusts pass through the country as part of their normal migration from north east Sudan to Saudi Arabia, reaffirming that Egypt is just 'a transfer station' for the locusts

Farmers in 15 out of the 27 Egyptian governorates suffered significant agricultural damage as the insects devoured crops and flowers.

This year Passover will begin on the evening of March 25 and end on the evening of April 2.

The infestation comes as a study warns that yellow-legged Asian hornets that prey on bees are among the latest non-native species threatening UK wildlife, and even people’s health.

A growing number of alien species, from killer shrimps to Spanish slugs, are set to soon reach our shores, a Europe-wide study warns.

The Asian hornet, which grows to between 2.5cm and 3cm (1-1.2 inches), preys on native honeybees, wasps and other pollinators, potentially devastating hives and threatening honey and crop production.

Stan Deo's sight has a video of the locusts in Egypt. Their article also mentions that Egypt had another locust invasion in 2004, I believe.

Anyone watching that new show Zero Hour? Quite interesting. The reason that I mention this, is that last weeks show ended with a scene of a container with giant locusts flitting about. Kind of a weird coincidence.

Not looking forward to any big nasty bugs coming our way. hide Better stock up on some Raid soon.

Gaddafi's Fall Leads to Desert Locusts' Rise

Visible locusts in Israel 200px-Muammar_al-Gaddafi_at_the_AU_summit

The fall of Muammar Gaddafi has led to at least one adverse consequence in Libya: the rise of desert locusts.

Amid political turmoil, the country has neglected its pest control operations, putting croplands there and in nearby African countries at imminent risk of destruction by locust swarms, the Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO) of the United Nations warned on Tuesday.

"The fall of Gaddafi was an enormous factor, to be honest," said Keith Cressman, FAO senior locust forecasting officer, according to the Financial Times. "It depleted the Libyans' capacity to monitor and respond as they normally would."

Desert locust swarms formed in Libya and Algeria in mid-May after abundant rainfall facilitated growth of vegetation on which they feed. However, insecurity along the Libya-Algeria border — a consequence of the uprising — has prevented affected areas from being sprayed.

Gaddafi's regime tightly controlled the country's locust population, regularly sending convoys of survey and pest control vehicles into the desert areas where locusts breed, Cressman said. Libyan convoys even came to the aid of other African countries facing locust infestations. "But now they are the ones needing help," he said.

When the crop-destroying insects aren't kept in check, swarms can develop and move south into neighboring countries, such as Niger and Mali. During a plague, a swarm of billions of locusts stretching hundreds of square miles can descend on farmland, each insect capable of eating its own weight in food every day.

Such a plague affected farmers in two dozen mainly African countries from 2003 to 2005. Although the current infestation is nowhere near as severe as that one was, the FAO said the conflict in Mali (the north of the country has been taken over by rebel Islamists) could hamper response efforts there, aggravating the problem.

I was talking to a dear friend and we were discussing how to prove or disprove Nathan Leal's work. I said, you can't disprove or prove that the portals were opened and he said, how do we know the locusts in the bible are visible? We hung up the phone without conclusion and he called back when he saw this on Fox News....

This is an instance I think The Lord is speaking to us.

Would you?

Thanks, guys. The Hagmann program from 2-17-13 that's listed on his website also looks intriguing - the prophetic downfall of the US & open portals.
