I absolutely love the letter of 1st John. And I'm working on a deeper structure, keyed to the picture below.

From top to bottom the rows are as follows:

A - helm (see message in v. 2:2)
B - sword (commandments in v. 2:3, 4, 7, 8 )
C - boots
D - belt (truth in v. 2:20, 21)
E - shield (promise in v. 2:25, confidence v. 2:28, hope v. 3:3)
F - vest (or breastplate, righteousness in v. 3:7, 10, 12)
E - shield (confidence v. 3:21, ask/pray v. 3:22, believe. v 3:23))
D - belt (Spirit of Truth in v. 3:24, 4:1, 3, 6)
C - boots
B - sword (commandments in v. 4:21, 5:2,3)
# - cloak (note Isa 59:17, witness/record in v. 5:6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11)
A - helm (life & eternal life in v. 5:16 & 5:20)
