Nevalı Çori: The 10,400 year old Megalithic Temple near Göbekli Tepe

Published on Jul 30, 2017
Andrew Collins and Hugh Newman investigate Nevalı Çori that was built around 8400 BC and was contemporary with the later phases of Göbekli Tepe. The site was excavated between 1983-1991 when the area was to be flooded by the Atatürk Dam.

The entire site was removed and is now on display in Sanliurfa Museum in Turkey. It has intricate stonework, including T-pillars in the abstract form of humans like those at Göbekli. The oldest domesticated Einkorn wheat was found there and numerous statues, including a Vedic-looking head with serpent on the back have raised questions as to who built it. The settlement contains a temple and various other structures and was located about 490 m above sea level, in the foothills of the Taurus Mountains, on both banks of the Kantara stream, a tributary of the Euphrates.
