The US government will partially shut down at midnight ET after lawmakers failed to reach agreement on a deal that President Trump says must include $5 billion for building a wall on the southern border.
This is a developing story. Return to this post for updates.
UPDATE 1
The Senate and House have adjourned without reaching a deal.
UPDATE 2
Vice President Mike Pence and Jared Kushner were among those who had been huddling in negotiations across the Capitol.
UPDATE 3
What to expect via The New York Times: . • Nine departments will close: The Treasury as well as the departments of Agriculture, Homeland Security, Interior, State, Housing and Urban Development, Transportation, Commerce and Justice.
• More than 420,000 people will work without pay, including nearly 54,000 Customs and Border Protection agents and 42,000 Coast Guard employees. 53,000 T.S.A. agents will keep working, as will air traffic controllers and aviation and railroad safety inspectors. • Another 380,000 workers will be furloughed. • The status of National Parks will be up in the air. Park staff would be furloughed, although the parks themselves would remain accessible. However, some parks, including the Grand Canyon, are planning to stay open. • Visa and passport services will continue “as long as there are sufficient fees to support operations,” a department spokesman said, but passport agencies located in government buildings affected by a lapse in appropriations may become “unavailable to the public.” -RW |
