It isn't just guns, though. We cannot have knife blades over 6 inches long. Not too long ago a celebrity had her house broken into by a stalker, and she ended up in hot water for brandishing a kitchen knife at the attacker.
On the other hand, the police are helpful and friendly. They do foot patrols, even in smaller communities, and rarely pull someone over for speeding but rather for safety violations. The speed cameras do the other work and the fine comes in the mail with your photo on it (ask me how I know this!)...or if they are doing "speed traps" they wear bright yellow jackets and stand out very prominently so as to avoid entrapment.
The average person here is caught on camera some 300 times a day, but my neighbors are happy to have traded privacy for "safety."
