Vision Of EU Superstate Put To European Voters This Spring
The concept of a "United States Of Europe" has been thrown around for decades as the solution to many of Europe's problems.
However, many EU officials now feel we are at the precipice of "true political union" as we approach elections to the European Parliament in May of this year.
European Commissioner Jose Manuel Barroso believes that as the Eurozone adopts federalist structures on fiscal and economic policy it will be necessary to also have political structures that will fundamentally reshape the way the EU works.
Such changes would include a United States of Europe, with the commission serving as the primary seat of government.
The commission would have two chambers - the European Parliament and a "senate" of member states.
European Parliament would supersede the sovereignty of MPs in their local countries.
National leaders, meeting as the European Council, would be reduced to a more consultative or second look function, similar to the House of Lords in England.
Under this political union, fiscal policies would be set in Brussels and a president of Europe would be elected.
Although it is unclear who would be doing the voting for this EU President - the population of Europe as a whole or the European Members of Parliament.
The push for greater economic and political union has also stirred up unprecedented levels of support for anti-EU parties leading the charge against integration in England, France, the Netherlands and Greece.
The greatest opposition to further integration remains in England where some EU officials have already written off Britain with the presumption they will never go along with full integration.
The outcome of these elections could reshape Europe for decades to come.
