Current seismic signal (IGN) |
Depth vs time of today's quakes under El Hierro |
The earthquake swarm continues with little changes. Most epicenters have remained in an area at about 15-17 km depth a few km NW off the western tip of the island. Volcanic tremor, suggesting magma movements, is continuous with strong pulses every few hours. Earthquake count today (only magnitudes >2): 111 Update Sun 24 Mar 11:02 | |
Current tremor amplitude (IGN) |
A strong pulse of volcanic tremor has started, accompanied by a 3.2 magnitude quake at 15 km depth at 09:40 GMT. It seems that magma is continuing to move, and the scenario of a possible new eruption is becoming more and more likely. Some of the earthquakes listed are quite shallow (few km), but they are most likely a result of tectonic adjustments caused by the ongoing inflation (about 5 cm so far for the western parts of the island). Update Sun 24 Mar 10:07The situation has remained stable, tremor has eased a bit, possibly either because the flow of magma has been lower or because its is currently blocked. - 23 earthquakes (>mag 2) so far today - earthquake epicenters around 16-17 km, in the same area to the NW of the island's western tip. |

Canary Islands Red Alert- 'Eruption at El Hierro in Near Future Increasingly Likely' http://countdowntozerotime.org/
Pic on link:
Will we soon have an eruption of the El Hierro Volcano in the Canary Islands? According to Volcano Discovery, the scenario of this happening in the NEAR FUTURE is becoming increasingly likely. In fact, there is now a Red Alert and evacuations going on in La Restinga as shared in the first video below. Check out the map above of recent seismic activity in the area; something is surely getting ready to happen with 155 earthquakes above magnitude 2 today (Saturday) alone. What might an El Hierro eruption mean to North America and the world? John Moore discussed that possibility previously in the 2nd video below.
First, from Volcano Discovery: The seismic swarm continues with even increasing intensity, as to both the average magnitude and frequency of earthquakes, as well as amplitude of harmonic volcanic tremor which is oscillating between higher and lower phases. This might correspond to some sort of “stop and go” behavior of magma moving its way through new cracks in the lower crust beneath the island. The location of the epicenters of quakes, the presumed location of the current magma intrusions, is now about 5 km NW of the western tip of the island, and at depths between 10-17 km. No strong upwards trend is yet visible, but this could change quickly.
Today’s earthquake count so far: - 155 earthquakes > mag 2 - including 15 between M3-3.5 Earthquakes continue with increasing magnitudes |

Scientists Believe El Hierro Volcano Has More Magma Than Teneguía
The eruption on La Palma in 1971 blasted 40 million cubic meters of magmatic material to the outside and lasted 24 days. The El Hierro could take up to a month and a 55.5 million cubic meters.

GUERRA PEDRO — Scientists working for weeks in El Hierro believe the volcano that rumbles beneath the soil of the smallest island of the Canary Islands can hide in the magma chamber more material than (what) Teneguía expelled in La Palma, in 1971. This conclusion was reached after complex mathematical calculations that lead them to have a real close approximation of what lies along the 12 km route they believe has made the magma over the past three months, after the Last July, the first detected earthquakes of the crisis on alert scientists from around the world. Because there is more material magmatic eruption could also be longer than 40 years ago just occurred in the neighboring island. |

Quake shakes island in Spain's Canaries PlacardEnlarge (Globalpost/GlobalPost) What do you think?
An earthquake measuring 4.1 on the Richter scale shook El Hierro island in Spain's Canaries on Monday, the strongest of hundreds of tremblors recorded in recent days in the territory which suffered an undersea volcanic eruption in 2011, Spain's National Geographical Institute said Monday.
The earthquake struck at 3:41 pm (1441 GMT) and its epicentre was in the Atlantic Ocean about 12 kilometres (7.5 miles) west of the island, a spokesman for the institute said. It was measured at a depth of 16 kilometres and was preceded by another earthquake measuring 4.0 on the Richter scale.
About 800 earthquakes have been recorded in El Hierro, which has about 10,000 inhabitants, since March 18, the spokesman added.
The majority have measured above 2.0 on the Richter but only a handful have been strong enough for people on the island to notice.
In October 2011 an underwater volcano erupted off the coast of El Hierro, two days after an earthquake measuring 4.3 on the Richter scale rocked the island. MORE@LINK |

| Earthquakes, Inflation Suggest New Magma Intruding Under El Hierro Over the last few weeks, many people have been noticing a sharp increase in earthquakes under El Hierro in the Canary Islands. If you recall, in 2010-12, the volcanic island was the home of an offshore submarine eruption that produced some stunning drifts of volcanic tephra and floating “coconuts” of inflated sediment coated in lava. That eruption (in the broadest sense) lasted until March 2012 and since then, beyond some minor earthquake swarms that didn’t lead to any new eruptive activity, life has gone back to normal on El Hierro. |

Multiple earthquakes over the Easter weekend around El Hierro Island, one of the Canary Islands, have raised some parts of the island by as much as 11 centimetres (4.3 inches). This includes a 4.9 magnitude earthquake Sunday, following 129 quakes below 1.3 magnitude through Saturday.
The majority of quakes making up this seismic event occurred at depths between 11 kilometers (6.8 miles) and 15 kilometers (9.3 miles), and ranged between 2.0 and 4.5 on the Richter Scale. VolcanoDiscovery reports this may be a sign magma is rising to the surface, but stuck around 20km deep where the 4.9 quake took place; these are signals there may be a volcanic eruption in the near future.
The 4.9 magnitude quake occurred roughly 10 kilometers (6.2 miles) off shore of El Hierro Island, the southern-most of the Canary Islands chain. It was felt by around 10,000 residents of the island. In response, local authorities closed western roads on the island, and other steps, after raising the alert level on the island to the second-highest civil level.
El Hierro, itself, was likely created as a result of volcanic activity taking place over a million years ago. |
