I'm creating this posting specifically to pin it. Breaking news on the happenings with anything listed in the topic line will be easier to follow if it's all in one spot and not scattered all over. Please post 'em here. If nothing comes of all this commotion I'll un-pin the topic soon after the dust settles.

Russia says it is negotiating with Cuba, Venezuela, Nicaragua, Algeria, Cyprus, the Seychelles, Vietnam and Singapore about access to facilities that can be used by its navy and strategic bombers. (Image: Google Maps)
(CNSNews.com) – At a time ofescalated tensions with the West over Ukraine, Russia says it is negotiating with eight governments around the world for access to military facilities, to enable it to extend its long-range naval and strategic bomber capabilities.
Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu said Wednesday the military was engaged in talks with Cuba, Venezuela, Nicaragua, Algeria, Cyprus, the Seychelles, Vietnam and Singapore.
“We need bases for refueling near the equator, and in other places,” ITAR-Tass quoted him as saying.
Russia is not looking to establish bases in those locations, but to reach agreement to use facilities there when required.
The countries are all strategically located – in three leftist-ruled countries close to the U.S.; towards either end of the Mediterranean; in the Indian Ocean south of the Gulf of Aden; and near some of the world’s most important shipping lanes in the Malacca Strait and South China Sea.
Access to the new locations would extend the Russian military’s potential reach well beyond its existing extraterritorial bases, at the Syrian port of Tartus and in former Soviet states – Ukraine’s Sevastopol, Armenia, Belarus, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan and the occupied Georgian regions of Abkhazia and South Ossetia.
Shoigu said Russia was also beefing up its existing military presence in the post-Soviet region, doubling its troop numbers in Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan, and deploying a regiment of troops to Belarus where it already has fighter aircraft stationed.
“Russia has started reviving its navy and strategic aviation since mid-2000s, seeing them as a tool to project the Russian image abroad and to protect its national interests around the globe,” the RIA Novosti state news agency commented.
“Now, Moscow needs to place such military assets in strategically important regions of the world to make them work effectively toward the goal of expanding Russia’s global influence.”
During his previous tenure at the Kremlin, President Vladimir Putin in 2002 shut down a Cold War-era radar base in Cuba and a naval base in Cam Ranh Bay, Vietnam. Russia cited financial constraints, but the move was also seen at the time as an attempt to improve relations with Washington.
The listening station near Havana had been a key intelligence facility for decades, while the Vietnamese base, which was built by the U.S. during the Vietnam War, was leased to the Soviet Union in 1979 and became the largest Soviet base in the world beyond Moscow’s Warsaw Pact allies.
Upon his return to the presidency in 2012, Putin began exploring options to renew alliances with the communist countries, and Russian Navy chief Vice Admiral Viktor Chirkov said that year Cuba and Vietnam were in the frame.
Russia is now helping Vietnam to upgrade facilities at Cam Ranh Bay, including a submarine training center, and Russia is negotiating for preferential access to refueling and repair facilities there for its ships.
As for the Western hemisphere, Russian Navy ships in 2008 made their first visit since the end of the Cold War, holding joint maneuvers with the Venezuelan Navy in the Caribbean, navigating the Panama Canal, and making a port call in Havana.
Russian Navy vessels visited Cuba again in 2009 and last August – and on Wednesday, a Russian intelligence-gathering ship, the Viktor Leonov, docked in Havana harbor with no explanation from the government or state media coverage, the Associated Press reported.
Russian strategic bombers also visited the region in 2008 – for the first time since long-range flights by the aircraft were halted after the Soviet Union’s collapse – and again last fall, when two Tupolev “Blackjacks” carried out combat training patrols between Venezuela and Nicaragua.
Russian defense spending has been climbing sharply in the years since its last military engagement – the invasion of Georgia in August 2008 – and early this year it was reported to have overtaken Britain to become the world’s third biggest spender, behind the U.S. and China.
According to the British consultancy HIS Jane’s, Russia’s defense expenditure has more than doubled since 2007, and will have tripled by 2016. [cns-donate]

Russia never stopped planning to "take over the world". They were just biding their time. waiting for a weak link to appear. I think his name is Barry and I think that time has come and it's a bit scary.

What is scary is all those Russian troops over here on our soil and Russia’s upper house of parliament asking President Vladimir Putin to recall Moscow’s ambassador from the United States. If war breaks out between us there will be American and Russian blood in the streets of the U.S. of A. and that I don't want to see happen.
DON'T let 'em take your guns!!!!

From Joel Rosenberg, now:
"PUTIN SEIZES SOUTHERN UKRAINE. CZAR RISING. RUSSIAN FORCES OCCUPY CRIMEA. OBAMA FACES BIGGEST TEST OF PRESIDENCY. WHAT WILL COME NEXT?"
"Putin formally asked Russian parliament for authorization to use force in Ukraine. • Received unanimous consent from Russian Senate. • Russian legislators warned of “apocalyptic consequences” if Kremlin didn't move. • Putin ordered 6,000 troops into southern Ukraine. * Russian forces have occupied Crimea. • More than 150,000 Russian troops have been mobilized and are awaiting Putin’s command. • Kremlin ignoring President Obama’s warning about “costs” of Kremlin intervention. * How far will Putin go? • Meanwhile, Netanyahu heads to U.S. on Sunday. * Expects showdown with Obama over Iran, Mideast peace process. * Obama set to increase pressure on Israel to make deep concessions and conclude final peace treaty by 2015. ......"
"March comes in like a lion.
• How will President Obama respond to Putin's invasion of Ukraine? • This crisis -- head to head with Putin -- is the biggest test of the Obama presidency. • This is bigger than the crises with Libya, Egypt, and Syria confrontations combined. • This is a fundamental power struggle with a steadily-rising imperialist Czar, and a critical test of the NATO alliance. • It could define America’s role as a superpower for years to come. • Russia under Putin invaded Georgia in 2008. • Russia under Putin moving into Ukraine in 2012. • If there really is no penalty -- if Mr. Obama’s talk of “costs” on Russia for invading neighbors proves to be just talk -- what lessons will Putin draw and who else might he use military force against? • Remember back to March 2012 when Obama told Putin (via Medvedev) he would have “more flexibility” on contentious issues after the elections? • What factor will such “flexibility” play in this crisis?...."

Obama Threatens Putin with 'Isolation' Over Ukraine Incursion
U.S. President Obama phones Russian President Vladimir Putin, tells him Russia violated international law with its incursion into Ukraine.

U.S. President Barack Obama on Saturday threatened Russian President Vladimir Putin withpolitical and economic isolation” over Russia’s military incursion in Ukraine.
AFP reported that the warning came in a 90-minute phone call between the two leaders. Obama reportedly told Putin that Russia had violated international law with its incursion into Ukraine.
The White House said Obama called on Putin to pull Russian troops back to their bases in Crimea and warned that continued violation of international law by Moscow would lead to further "political and economic isolation."
The call came as Obama's national security team met to draw up U.S. responses to the escalating crisis, after Russia's parliament gave Putin the formal go ahead to send forces to Ukraine and officials in Kiev said 6,000 forces had already been sent to Crimea.
"President Obama expressed his deep concern over Russia's clear violation of Ukrainian sovereignty and territorial integrity," the White House said in a detailed statement about the call, according to AFP.
Obama told Putin that his actions were a "breach of international law, including Russia's obligations under the UN Charter, and of its 1997 military basing agreement with Ukraine."
"The United States calls on Russia to de-escalate tensions by withdrawing its forces back to bases in Crimea and to refrain from any interference elsewhere in Ukraine," the statement said.
Obama also warned Putin that the people of Ukraine had the right to determine their own future.
"Russia's continued violation of international law will lead to greaterpolitical and economic isolation," the statement added.
Obama informed Putin, with whom he has had tense public interactions, that he would order American diplomats to stop preparatory meetings for the G8 summit in Sochi, Russia in June.
Obama did use the call to recognize that there were deep cultural ties between Ukraine and Russia and that there was a need to protect ethnic Russians in the former Soviet republic, reported AFP.
At the same time, he argued that the proper way to do that was through a dialogue with the government in Kiev and with international observers on the ground appointed by the United Nations Security Council and the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE).
Meanwhile on Saturday, acting Ukrainian President Olexander Turchynovplaced the Ukrainian armed forces on "high alert" after Russian forces stormed the Crimean peninsula.
Turchynov reportedly ordered increased security at nuclear power plants, airports and other strategic infrastructure, because of the threat of "potential aggression" from the Russian troops.

In Ukraine, the US and Europe have limited options
Past American efforts to punish Moscow have been complicated by Washington’s need for Russian cooperation on Syria and Iran

WASHINGTON (AP) — Despite blunt warnings about costs and consequences, US President Barack Obama and European leaders have limited options for retaliating against Russia’s military intervention in Ukraine, the former Soviet republic now at the center of an emerging conflict between East and West.
Russian President Vladimir Putin has so far dismissed the few specific threats from the United States, which include scrapping plans for Obama to attend an international summit in Russia this summer and cutting off trade talks sought by Moscow. Because Ukraine does not have full-member status in NATO, the US and Europe have no obligation to come to its defense. And broader international action through the United Nations seems all but impossible, given Russia’s veto power as a member of the Security Council.
“There have been strong words from the US and other counties and NATO,” said Keir Giles, a Russian military analyst at the Chatham House think tank in London. “But these are empty threats. There is really not a great deal that can be done to influence the situation.”
As if to underscore that point, Putin on Saturday requested and was granted permission to use Russia’s military not just in the pro-Russian region of Crimea, but also throughout Ukraine. Putin’s request came one day after Obama warned that any violation of Ukraine’s “sovereignty and territorial integrity would be deeply destabilizing.”
Saturday’s developments follow three months of political upheaval in Ukraine following president Viktor Yanukovych’s rejection of a partnership agreement with the European Union in favor of historical ties with Moscow. Yanukovych fled Kiev, Ukraine’s capital, last week and now is in Russia.
Putin’s moves are sure to deepen tensions in his already troubled relationship with Obama, who has struggled to find a formula for getting the Russian leader to change his calculus on a myriad of issues. The White House said the two leaders spoke for 90 minutes Saturday, with Obama warning Putin that Russia’s “continued violation of international law will lead to greater political and economic isolation.”
American efforts to punish Russia on Ukraine and other matters have been complicated by the White House’s need for Russian cooperation on stopping Syria’s civil war, negotiating a nuclear accord with Iran, and transporting American troops and equipment out of Afghanistan through Russian supply routes.
“We face a difficult choice of punishing Russia by effectively punishing ourselves,” said Andrew Kuchins, the director of the Russia program at the Washington-based Center for Strategic and International Studies.

Obama has tried to use his travel plans to Russia as a bargaining chip before, in the hopes that Putin might bend under the threat of a diplomatic embarrassment. Last summer, the White House dangled the prospect of canceling a bilateral summit between Obama and Putin as it pressed Russia to return National Security Agency leaker Edward Snowden to the United States.
When Russia instead granted Snowden temporary asylum, Obama canceled his one-on-one meeting with Putin, but still attended an international meeting in St. Petersburg.
US officials say they are in discussions now with European officials about Obama and other leaders possibly skipping the Group of Eight economic summit scheduled for June in Sochi, the site of the just-concluded Winter Olympics. Obama’s top advisers gathered at the White House Saturday to discuss other options.
The White House appears to be giving no serious consideration to American military involvement in Ukraine. In his carefully worded statement Friday, Obama avoided saying that a destabilized Ukraine would be a national security concern for the US.
Instead, he said only that it was “not in the interest of Ukraine, Russia or Europe.”
In Europe, officials expressed concern about the Russian military escalation, but offered few specific options for stopping or punishing Putin. The European Union, dealing with its own internal problems, has appeared reluctant to fully embrace troubled Ukraine or risk the economic consequences of confronting Russia, one of its largest trading partners.
“The world is on the verge of a conflict the outcome of which cannot be perceived yet,” said Polish Prime Minster Donald Tusk, whose country shares a border with Ukraine. Tusk appealed for Europe to send a “very clear signal” that it will not tolerate acts of aggression, but he did not outline specific steps.
Czech Foreign Minister Lubomir Zaoralek said Russia’s attempts to “escalate the situation in Ukraine” reminded him of the 1968 Soviet-led invasion of Czechoslovakia, which crushed liberal reforms and ended an era known as the Prague Spring.
“We don’t solve and can’t solve disagreements in Europe by force,” Zaoralek said.
The UN Security Council met for a second straight day to discuss the growing crisis in Ukraine, which has asked four permanent council members — the US, Britain, France and China — for help in stopping Russia’s “aggression.” But Russia, as the fifth permanent member, holds veto power, meaning there would be virtually no chance of getting even a resolution condemning Russian intervention.

Moments ago Interfax reported that two Russian anti-submarine warships have appeared off the coast of Ukraine's Crimea region, violating an agreement on Moscow's lease of a naval base, according to a Ukrainian military source as saying. Then again what else would a Ukrainian military source say. The source added that the two vessels, part of Russia's Baltic Fleet, had been sighted in a bay at Sevastopol, where Moscow's Black Sea Fleet has a base.
So imagine two extra anti-sub ships off Sevastopol in the map below which until this latest update from Contemporary Issues and Geography, was keeping an accurate running update of all the most recent developments in the staggered Russian invasion of the Ukraine.

Ukrainian Navy flagship takes Russia’s side – report

Ukraine’s Navy flagship, the Hetman Sahaidachny frigate, has reportedly refused to follow orders from Kiev, and come over to Russia’s side and is returning home after taking part in NATO operation in the Gulf of Aden flying the Russian naval flag. There has been conflicting information on where exactly the vessel is, but a Russian senator has confirmed to Izvestia daily that the frigate defected to the Russian side.
“Ukraine’s Navy flagship the Hetman Sahaidachny has come over to our side today. It has hung out the St Andrew’s flag,” Senator Igor Morozov, a member of the committee on the international affairs, told Izvestia daily.
He said the flagship is on its way back to the Black Sea after drills in the Mediterranean. “The crew has fulfilled the order by the chief commander of Ukraine’s armed forces Viktor Yanukovich,” he added.
The move comes after the Navy command resigned Friday. Self-appointed President Aleksandr Turchinov made Rear Admiral Denis Berezovsky the new Navy Chief, a statement published on the President’s website Saturday said.
Arseniy Yatsenyuk, the Prime Minister of Ukraine had earlier asked his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan not to let the frigate through the Bosporus strait, according to the Kiev Times. The ship captain and the head of Ukraine’s contingent in the operation, Rear Admiral Andrey Tarasov disobeyed orders from Kiev.
The Hetman Sahaidachny returns to Sevastopol, Crimea after taking part in a joint counter-piracy operation with NATO and the EU off the Horn of Africa, reported UNN on Friday, citing Ukraine’s Defense Ministry. On February 26, after crossing the Suez Canal, the ship entered the Mediterranean Sea and was expected to be in Sevastopol in early March.

Russian S-400 Missile Systems On The Move March 2nd, 2014
Ukraine’s new prime minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk says his country is refusing to respond with force to what he calls Russian “provocation” in Crimea.
The increasing instability in Ukraine has seen Western powers including Britain and the United States call for an urgent de-escalation of tensions.
“The inadequate presence of Russian troops on Ukrainian territory is a provocation, and Russian attempts to make Ukraine react with force have failed,” Mr Yatsenyuk said at a televised cabinet meeting.
“It is unacceptable when armoured Russian military vehicles are out in the centre of Ukrainian towns.
“We do not give in to provocative actions, we do not use force and we demand that Russia stop its provocative actions and return the troops to base.”
The prime minister’s comments came as Russian president Vladimir Putin sought approval to move armed forces into Ukrainian territory.
Earlier, Ukraine’s defence chief had accused Russia of already sending 6,000 troops and 30 armoured personnel carriers into Crimea, the restive peninsula trying to gain broader independence from new pro-EU leaders in Kiev.

The Common Sense Show
Obama is famous for drawing imaginary red lines in the sand and then not acting. He warned Russia about their involvement in the Syrian conflict in which hundreds of thousands have died. He warned Russia against assisting Iran with its nuclear program. Putin has ignored Obama at every turn and holds him in absolute contempt. The unfolding war in Ukraine is just another case in point. Obama does not have the intestinal fortitude to stand up to Putin. Or, is Obama playing for a much higher authority and Putin is supposed to win? I will address the “theatrical aspect” of what could be playing out behind the scenes in the Rothschild/Rockefeller bankster empire in a later article. This article is focusing on connecting the dots of the key events as they are occurring in near real time as it relates to a military standoff in Ukraine.
Putin Receives Approval to Invade Ukraine On March 1, 2014 at 420pm (EST) Reuters reported that Russian President Vladimir Putin has insisted upon and has won the approval of the Russian parliament to invade the Ukraine. Conversely, the new Ukrainian government is warning of war and has subsequently put its troops on high alert and has appealed to NATO for military assistance.
Ukranian Foreign Minister Andriy Deshchytsya has met with European and US officials and sent a request to NATO to “examine all possibilities to protect the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Ukraine”. Obama is already on the record stating that the US would defend the Ukraine.
Reuters is further reporting that troops wearing uniforms with no identifying insignias, but have been identified as Russian troops, riding in vehicles with Russian license plates, have captured and occupied Crimea.
As I reported on Friday, Crimea is an isolated peninsula in the Black Sea which contains the headquarters of the Russian Black Sea Fleet. The maintenance of the Black Sea Fleet is vital to the defense of Russia’s Southwestern underbelly. Further, any hope that Russia maintains of defending Syria and Iran from an American invasion rests upon the preservation of the Black Sea Fleet Headquarters in the city of Sevastopol. Kiev’s new authorities have been powerless to stop them.
In a later development, Ukrainian acting Prime Minister, Arseny Yatseniuk, stated that “It is unacceptable when armored Russian military vehicles are out in the center of Ukrainian towns”. The statement was made on Saturday before a government meeting in the Ukrainian capital city of Kiev.
Russian aircraft carrying nearly 2,000 troops have landed at a military airbase near the regional capital of the restive Crimean peninsula, a top Ukrainian official has said, accusing Moscow of an “armed invasion”.
“Thirteen Russian aircraft landed at the airport of Gvardeyskoye [near the city of Simferopol] with 150 people in each one,” Sergiy Kunitsyn, the Ukrainian president’s special representative in Crimea. He also said that the airspace had been closed when the deployment happened. It strongly appears that a massive Russian troop buildup is underway in Crimea. Is invading Ukraine Putin’s next move?
CNN is reporting that airspace in the region reopened Saturday, only a day after Ukraine accused Russian Black Sea forces of trying to seize two important airports in Crimea. However, Ukrainian security forces had prevented them from taking control. It appears that Russia is not committed to physically engaging Ukrainian military forces at this time. Once the full Russian force is in place, that fact may change.
The Wall Street Journal is Reporting that pro-Russian Crimean militias are blocking key roads to the area in order to keep the military forces from Kiev entering the region and assuming governmental control. These events are clearly the precursor to a bloody civil war in which Russia will clearly interject themselves into the conflict.
Speaking on Friday, Obama, the US president, said he was “deeply concerned” at the reports of the troop movements of Russian Federation soldiers in Crimea. Obama said: “Any violation of Ukraine’s sovereignty would be deeply disturbing.”
Ukraine’s acting president, Oleksander Turchinov, is accusing Russia of committing an open invasion of Crimea, thus, this is an attack upon the sovereignty of Ukraine.
Turchinov compared Russians actions to what they did to Georgia, in 2008, in terms of invading Akhazia region which has a large ethnic Russian population.
Russia’s actions remind me of how Hitler’s Germany occupied Czechoslovakia without firing a shot in order to ostensibly protect German speaking residents. Crimea is a unique province within Ukraine in that most of the citizens are Russian and align themselves with Moscow. Putin has stated that Russian forces are in Crimea to protect the interest of pro-Russians in the area.
Obama and European leaders would consider skipping a G8 summit in Sochi, Russia, planned for this summer if Russia intervenes militarily in Ukraine, a senior US official said on Friday.
The senior official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the US is consulting with its European partners on potential costs that might be imposed on Russia for any Ukraine intervention. The official said Washington’s response could also include withholding deeper trade and commerce ties that Moscow is seeking. These are impotent threats being made by Obama.
Stop Or I’ll Say Stop Again
Ukrainian people take part in a rally against Russia in front of the U.S. embassy in Kiev March 1, 2014.
Obama is all bark and no bite as he has called on Putin, the Russian president, to stop “provocations” in the semi-autonomous region of Crimea.
“Russia has sent forces into Crimea… they are working on scenarios which are fully analogous with Abkhazia, when having initiated a military conflict, they started to annex the territory,” he said in televised comments.
Two Crimean airports, the main international airport in Simferopol and a military airfield in the city of Sevastopol, have been taken over by what the Ukrainian Interior Minister Arsen Avakov claimed to be members of the Russian Federation Fleet, in a statement posted on his Facebook account.
It is quite clear that we have multiple accounts which clearly state that Russia has occupied Crimea and the only opposition are a few Ukrainian military bases in the region. Again, Putin has outmaneuvered the West just as he did in Syria in the Fall of 2013.
The West does not appear to have the stomach to oppose Putin in Crimea. Putin has won. However, if Putin goes into Ukraine, that may be a different story.
The rubber will meet the road when the Russians decide what they are going to do with Ukrainian military bases located in Crimea. Clearly, if the Russians attack, or prevent resupply to these bases, the Ukraine will attack. There are already unconfirmed reports that there is a rapid deployment force of American NATO troops which have arrived in Ukraine. Everything points towards war if Putin continues on his present path. It is clear that the Russians are not going to remove its military interests from Crimea. It is also clear that the Ukrainians are not going to remove their military bases from Crimea. Something has to give and the fate of Ukraine, and ultimately the world will depend on whether or not a field commander does not make a miscalculation resulting in a shot hear around the world.
This just in, the US Sixth Fleet is sailing towards Crimea. Wasn’t it nice that the powers that be could wait until the corporate sponsored Olympics concluded? This opens the real possibility that Obama and Putin are following a predetermined script.

Ukraine calls up reserves against Russia. Putin spurns Obama’s call to de-escalate with fallout on Mid East
DEBKAfile Exclusive Analysis March 2, 2014, 2:22 PM (IST)
Russian military vehicles in Crimean town of Balaclava
It took US President Barack Obama 90 minutes of intense dialogue with the Russian president to grasp that Vladimir Putin is unshakably fixed on the course he has set for Ukraine and has no intention of withdrawing the Russian troops he has positioned in the Crimean peninsula. In fact, behind the diplomatic verbiage, Putin was clearly on the offensive. He let it be understood that unless the US and Europe rid Kiev of the “fascist gangs,” which had taken over, Moscow would move forces into additional parts of Ukraine to uphold its interests and “protect the Russian citizens and compatriots living there” for as long as the interim regime remained in Kiev.
Not a shot has so far been fired in the Russian military takeover of Crimea. This could change very rapidly and deteriorate into a head-on clash between Russian and anti-Russian elements on Ukraine soil.
Putin was not impressed by Obama’s accusation of being in ”clear violation of Ukrainian sovereignty and territorial integrity." Neither was he deterred by the US president’s threat of “international political and diplomatic isolation” - or even a Western boycott of the G8 summer summit in Sochi.
After all, he stood alone at the opening and closing ceremonies of the Olympic Winter Games - unattended by a single Western leader. After that experience, he is not afraid to stand alone on Ukraine as well, regardless of US and EU efforts to force him to abandon what he views as an imminent strategic threat on Russia’s doorstep.
So the West would be more productively served by leaning hard on the group of assorted protesters who seized power in Kiev and get them to step aside, or else seek an understanding with Moscow. Military brinkmanship will get them nowhere.
The basis of an understanding already exists. It was signed and sealed on Feb. 21, the day before the pro-Western coup in Kiev, in a deal with Viktor Yanukovich, brokered by the German, French and Polish foreign ministers, for a unity government, an early election and a new constitution curbing the president’s authority.
That deal was endorsed by Moscow as well as Washington. However, as time goes and the escalation continues, that deal will fade, along with the chances of a non-violent resolution of the Ukraine conflict.
Therefore, the US-EU tactic of turning the heat on Moscow is not just an exercise in futility; it is proving to be a major strategic blunder stemming from weakness, which now threatens to promote real violence and bloodshed.
The Interim government’s security council chief Sunday, March 2 announced a general mobilization of Ukraine’s 1 million reservists after placing the army on a combat footing. This step was virtually useless in practical terms while providing Putin with further impetus to continue his military expansion. He knows that the Kiev administration is broke, so how can it feed, equip, arm and provide transport for hundreds of thousands of troops? And does anyone know how many are loyal to the new regime?
Belatedly, the interim government appealed to the West for help This grossly uneven confrontation takes place under the critical gaze 2,000 km away in the eastern Mediterranean and 3,500 km away in the Persian Gulf of the leaders of Israel, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Iran, Syria, and Hizballah in Lebanon.
They may be said to share four significant conclusions:
1. President Obama was seen backing off a commitment to US allies for the second time in eight months. They remember his U-turn last August on US military intervention for the removal of Syrian President Bashar Assad for using chemical weapons. They also see Washington shying off from Russia’s use of military force and therefore not a reliable partner for safeguarding their national security.
2. The Middle East governments which opted to range with Vladimir Putin - Damascus, Tehran, Hizballah and, up to an initial point, Egypt, are ending up on the strong side of the regional equation.
The pro-American camp keeps falling back.
3. American weakness on the global front has strengthened the Iranian-Syrian bloc and its ties with Hizballah.
4. Putin standing foursquare behind Iran is an insurmountable obstacle to a negotiated and acceptable comprehensive agreement with Iran - just as the international bid for a political resolution of the Syrian conflict foundered last month.
With the Ukraine crisis looming ever larger, Israel’s Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu’s scheduled meeting Monday with President Obama at the White House is unlikely to be more than an exchange of polite platitudes.

Indeed! Peeps, go take a look at this. If it's true it sure explains a lot of things.

Arutz Sheva's Man on the Ground: Ukraine Situation 'Grim'
Arutz Sheva's correspondent in Kharkov said that Russia appeared to be preparing for a full-blown invasion of Ukraine

Ukraine 'may explode' Reuters
In a special report, Arutz Sheva'scorrespondent on the the ground in Kharkov, Ukraine said that it appeared that a full-scale Russian invasion of Crimea could be imminent. Yitzchak Ross reported Monday that the Russian side of the Crimean border was a solid wall of armored vehicles and tanks poised to cross the border at any minute.
In addition, he said, Russian Navy ships were patrolling the waters right outside the port of Sevastopol.
Currently, he said, there was no cellphone or Internet services in large parts of Crimea, with the Russians cutting off communications to those areas. The suspicion is that these are areas where Russia has already deployed troops, or is about to send soldiers.
Media outlets in Ukraine proper are running stories featuring desperate people crying out for Western assistance to prevent the impending Russian invasion, not only of Crimea but of parts of Ukraine. Commentators denounced European leaders, as well as U.S. President Barack Obama, for their failure to halt the Russian aggression, as they termed it.
Earlier, the New York Times quoted German Chancellor Andrea Merkel as telling Obama that “Putin has lost touch with reality, he is in another world.”
In his report, Ross said that the situation was indeed grim. Ukraine does not intend to capitulate and allow Russia to take over Crimea without a fight. According to witnesses, Russia now has a large force in Crimea, and is effectively in control of the area. Now, Ukrainian defense officials fear that Russia may invade part of Ukraine proper, something Russian President Vladimir Putin hinted at when he spoke at length with Obama over the weekend.
A top US military official was quoted in the American media as saying that Russia had some 6,000 troops in Crimea, and was in control of its water and airports. Ukraine has gone on full military alert, with Ukraine's Secretary of the National Security and Defense of Andriy Parubiy saying Sunday that the reservists will be trained immediately to defend the embattled country's borders. “It is essential to train all combat forces to full readiness,” Parubiy urged. “We have already asked the Foreign Ministry to seek help from the United States and Britain to secure our country.”
Earlier Monday, Ukraine's newly-installed Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk met with UK Foreign Minister William Hague. After the meeting, Yatsenyuk said that Ukraine would “never capitulate o Crimea or surrender it to anyone.”

Ukraine crisis: Russia warns of dropping US dollar as reserve currency if US imposes sanctions
Reuters March 4, 2014 A Kremlin aide was quoted on Tuesday as saying that if the United States were to impose sanctions on Russia over Ukraine, Moscow might be forced to drop the dollar as a reserve currency and refuse to pay off any loans to US banks.
Image: U.S. Dollar (Wiki Commons). Mr Sergei Glazyev, who is often used by the authorities to stake out a hardline stance but does not make policy, was cited by RIA news agency as saying Moscow could recommend that all holders of US treasuries sell them if Washington freezes the US accounts of Russian businesses and individuals. The US Senate Foreign Relations Committee is preparing legislation to provide support to Ukraine and consulting the Obama administration on possible sanctions against individual Russians, the committee’s chairman said on Monday. The committee was also consulting with President Barack Obama’s administration on possible sanctions against individuals ranging from visa bans and asset freezes to suspending military cooperation and sales, as well as economic sanctions. Sky News March 4, 2014 Russian soldiers have fired warning shots into the air as around 300 Ukrainian troops marched on the seized Belbek air base in Crimea. The unarmed Ukrainian servicemen, waving flags, approached the base which has been held by Russian forces. Around a dozen Russian soldiers warned them not to approach, before firing several shots into the air and reportedly saying they would shoot the Ukrainians if they continued to approach the base.
The US has suspended all military engagements with Russia over its deployment of troops in Crimea. Some 16,000 Russian troops are on the ground in the region – a move that the US said is in a clear violation of international law. Full article here

Did somebody say de-escalation? Earlier today, photos were distributed showing the latest military convoy reinforcements heading into the Crimea, accompanies by a Police car demonstrating Moscow license plate numbers, most likely providing further support to the pro-Russian forces in the peninsula. .zerohedge.com/sites/default/files/images/user5/imageroot/2014/03/Russian trucks.jpg] .zerohedge.com/sites/default/files/images/user5/imageroot/2014/03/Russian trucks cop car.jpg] .zerohedge.com/sites/default/files/images/user5/imageroot/2014/03/Russian trucks cop car 2.jpg]
Supposedly the trucks are carrying troops to reinforces the members of the new Crimean army, pictured below: .zerohedge.com/sites/default/files/images/user5/imageroot/2014/03/crimean army.jpg]
While at the same time along the makeshift border between Crimea and the mainland, the Pro-Russian forces are putting down minefields.
However, the Ukrainians, having already been mobilized for over a week, finally appear set to seize back the offensive: The first clip below captured the 80th Airborne Regiment out of Lviv moving out, direction mainland, preparing to repel foreign attack.
The next video shows what are allegedly Buk SAM batteries deployed in the Donetsk region, a city in Eastern Ukraine which in the past week has swayed between Ukraine and Russian authority.
The clip below shows the 95th Airborne brigade also moving out of their barracks in Zhytomyr in western Ukraine, heading East, with an impressive deployment of trucks and APCs.
2S19 "Msta-S" 152mm Howitzers on the move to Crimea.
Finally, 20 T-64 tanks preparing to depart in Bila Tserkva, a city in central Ukraine:
So where again are all those pundits who were so eager to explain away the Ukraine confrontation as one that will promptly be forgotten, and is by now most certainly priced in?

financial war will lead to real war :VISA BANS, ASSET FREEZES ARE NEXT’: EUROPE ANNOUNCES THREE STEP SANCTIONS AGAINST RUSSIA
on March 9, 2014
AFP Photo / Dominique Faget
EUROPEAN POLITICAL GANGSTERS TARGET RUSSIAN GANGSTERS IN A CRAZY SCENARIO THE END MUST BE NEAR FOR THE EU TO ACT IN SUCH A RASH MANNER WITH RUSSIA WHO SUPPLIES ITS ENERGY SUPPLIES. RUSSIA WILL SEE THIS AS THE BIGGEST THREAT YET TO ITS NATIONAL SECURITY.
EU leaders have threatened Russia with sanctions, which could include visa bans, asset freezes and various economic restrictions unless it engages in direct talks with the coup-appointed Ukrainian government.
As a first step, the EU has halted G8 summit preparations and visa-free talks with Russia. The European Council President, Herman Van Rompuy, on Thursday warned that if Moscow does not manage a de-escalation of the situation in Ukraine, it will “seriously affect the relations between the EU and Russia.” “If there is no de-escalation,the EU will decide on additional measures, such as visa restrictions, asset freezes and cancellation of the Russia-EU summit,” Rompuy said at a press conference as quoted by Interfax.
British Prime Minister David Cameron threatened that asset freezes and unspecified travel bans could be imposed on Russia “relatively quickly,” unless progress is made on dialogue with Ukraine. French President Francois Hollande said that further economic measures against Russia are also possible.
Originally posted at RT.com: French president Francois Hollande speaks during a press conference on March 6, 2014 in Brussels. (AFP Photo / Alain Jocard)
According to Cameron, those would be step-three in the sanctions and could carry “far-reaching consequences including in a broad range of economic areas.” Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk said there was “no enthusiasm” in Europe for sanctions on Russia but the move was “inevitable.”
German Chancellor Angela Merkel also blasted the referendum on joining the Russian Federation announced by Crimea’s parliament on Thursday as “illegal and incompatible with Ukraine’s constitution.”
Following an emergency meeting of European leaders in Brussels, Merkel said they “condemn the violation of Ukraine’s sovereignty with regard to Crimea,” and “consider its territorial integrity to be essential.”
The EU leaders urged the immediate withdrawal of what they believe are Russian troops blocking military installations in Crimea. All troops not part of the Ukrainian Armed Forces must lay down their weapons, Merkel said.
Ukraine should also receive the first portion of EU financial help swiftly, the German Chancellor believes. The EU plans to send 610 million euro to Kiev in the near future, which will later be followed by an aid package of 1 billion euro.
Quick signing of the political part of the EU association agreement with Ukraine is also a top priority task for the European leaders, according to Merkel. The trade-related part will be further discussed, taking into account close economic ties between Kiev and Moscow, she said.

US President Barack Obama on Thursday also gave a speech on the situation in Ukraine, calling to start“direct negotiations between Russia and Ukraine with participation of the international community,” Itar-Tass reports.
Speaking at the White House, Obama said the solution to the crisis should “take into account Russia’s interests” but heed the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine. A proposed referendum in Crimea to join Russia would violate international law, he added.
Earlier on Thursday, Russian Foreign Ministry spokesman Aleksandr Lukashevich said that Moscow will react to any attempts to hamper the process of obtaining visas for Russian citizens travelling to European countries.
“Should consular posts of any of the EU member countries move toward a certain tightening of visa application proceedings, we will immediately react to that,” he said.
He added that Russia was “surprised” by EU’s decision to freeze talks on a visa-free regime with Russia.
“It is obviously a politicized, unconstructive and baseless approach, which goes contrary to the existing agreements between Russia and the EU on further simplification of rules for mutual citizens’ travels,”Lukashevich stressed.
Russian President Vladimir Putin urged world leaders to consider the “consequences” of sanctions against Russia on Tuesday.
“I believe that in the modern world, where everything is interconnected and interdependent, it is possible to cause damage to another country, but this will be mutual damage and one should bear this in mind,” Putin said.
Meanwhile, the Crimean Prime Minister, Sergey Aksyonov, said he was bewildered by the threats of sanctions coming from the West with regard to the situation in Crimea. “We live here, we can choose our future on our own – since when is it punishable by sanctions? What is it, political persecution? In Lvov, a military installation was seized, the prosecutors and police were thrown out and regional authorities were self-proclaimed – and nobody imposed any sanctions,” Aksyonov told journalists at a media conference.

“As soon as the Russians for the first time concentrated on defending their interests – and not just Russians, the Ukrainians living here also, everyone got agitated and started talking sanctions. Do we advise America or Germany how to deal with their autonomous regions and tell people what to do? This is their own right, as is the right of the Crimeans for self-determination,” Aksyonov stressed.
The Crimean authorities have denounced the self-proclaimed government in Kiev and declared that all Ukrainian law enforcement and military deployed in the peninsula must take orders from them. The Crimea authorities have asked Russia to provide assistance to ensure peace and order in the region.
Crimeans began protesting after the new Kiev authorities introduced a law abolishing the use of other languages for official purposes in Ukraine. More than half the Crimean population is Russian and uses only this language for their communication.
Facts you need to know about Crimea and why it is in turmoil
Many units within the national armed forces have started joining up with the pro-Russian Crimean government and the locals who organized self-defense against right-wing radicals. Recently, the commander of the Ukrainian navy and most of the military stationed in the peninsula took new oaths.
Under the Russian-Ukrainian Partition Treaty determining the fate of the military bases and vessels in Crimea – signed in 1997 and prolonged in 2010 – Russia is allowed to have up to 25,000 troops, 24 artillery systems (with a caliber smaller than 100 mm), 132 armored vehicles, and 22 military planes, on the peninsula’s territory. The Russian Black Sea fleet is allowed to stay in Crimea until 2042. Moscow annually writes off $97.75 million of Kiev’s debt for the right to use Ukrainian waters and radio frequencies, and to compensate for the Black Sea Fleet’s environmental impact.

The world is one the verge of the largest collapse in known history yet the politicians and newspapers the world over keep telling us everything is fine.

Russian Paratroopers Hold Massive Drills as Crimea Vote Nears
An airborne division based in central Russia began large-scale exercises Tuesday against the backdrop of an ongoing political and security crisis in Ukraine. The Defense Ministry said units of the 98th Guards Airborne Division, based in Ivanovo, a city east of Moscow, were put on high alert and moved to unspecified locations to “check readiness” in simulated combat conditions. Four thousand troops, 36 military transport aircraft and an unspecified number of combat vehicles are taking part in the exercises, which will run until March 14. The drills will include a massive simultaneous paradrop involving 3,500 servicemen, the ministry said. The drills come in the wake of a number of military exercises in Russia’s western regions in the past days, including air defense drills, combat readiness snap checks and a launch of an intercontinental ballistic missile.

Russian Red Army Masses 80,000 Troops On Ukraine Border
Ukraine warned last night that 80,000 Russian troops were massing on its borders and could invade – as world leaders told Vladimir Putin to back off.
A senior security chief in Kiev said Moscow could launch a full-scale invasion and Russian troops would be in the Ukrainian capital within ‘two or three hours’ of the order to advance.
Heading to Ukraine? Armored personnel carriers near Rostov in Russia Photographs of Russian tanks and armoured personnel carriers close to Ukraine’s borders added to tensions.
Last night senior British officials told the Mail they had received reports about Russian troops massing on the border since Tuesday and were concerned by the show of force.
British intelligence is unsure whether the movements are intended to back up the annexation of Crimea, preparation for an invasion or simply defensive.
Moscow’s show of force came as Ukraine’s new prime minister, Arseniy Yatsenyuk, met Barack Obama in the Oval Office and Nato continued military exercises in Poland.

JOHN KERRY: RUSSIA HAS UNTIL MONDAY TO REVERSE COURSE IN UKRAINE
March 13, 2014
SOURCE: DAILY SLAVE
John Kerry's hypocrisy just seems to get worse with every passing day. He is now claiming that there will be serious repercussions for Russia on Monday if they don't cave to their demands. In Kerry's diseased mind he thinks the Kiev government that was formed as a result of a violent insurrection is legitimate. At the same time he claims that Sunday's referendum in Crimea where the people will choose whether to be part of Ukraine or Russia is illegitimate. So he basically thinks that violently overthrowing a government is legal but a group of people exercising their right to self-determination is illegal. Kerry is an unqualified moron who is on the brink of starting a world war with this insane rhetoric. From the Washington Examiner: Secretary of State John Kerry warned of serious repercussions for Russia on Monday if last-ditch talks over the weekend to resolve the crisis in Ukraine failed to persuade Moscow to soften its stance. Kerry will travel to London for a Friday meeting with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov ahead of a Sunday referendum vote in the Crimea region to secede from Ukraine and join the Russian Federation. U.S. and European officials argue that Moscow is orchestrating the referendum and waging an intimidation campaign with thousands of Russian troops controlling the region. If Russian-backed lawmakers in Crimea go through with the Sunday referendum, Kerry said the U.S. and its European allies will not recognize it as legitimate under international law. The U.S. and Europe on Monday would then unite to impose sanctions on Russia, Kerry told a Senate Appropriations subcommittee Thursday during a hearing on the State Department's budget. “There will be a response of some kind to the referendum itself,” Kerry said. “If there is no sign [from Russia] of any capacity to respond to this issue ... there will be a very serious series of steps on Monday.”

SOURCE: ZERO HEDGE
"Sanctions could lead to retaliatory action, and that would trigger a spiral with unforeseeable consequences," warns China's envoy to Germany adding that "we don't see any point in sanctions." On the heels of Merkel's warning that Russia risked "massive" political and economic damage if it did not change course, Reuters reports ambassador Shi Mingde urged patience saying "the door is still open" for diplomacy (though we suspect it is not) ahead of this weekend's referendum. Russia's Deputy Economy Minister Alexei Likhachev responded by promising "symmetrical" sanctions by Moscow. So now we have China joining the fray more aggressively.
Via Reuters,
China's top envoy to Germany has warned the West against punishing Russia with sanctions for its intervention in Ukraine, saying such measures could lead to a dangerous chain reaction that would be difficult to control. In an interview with Reuters days before the European Union is threatening to impose its first sanctions on Russia since the Cold War, ambassador Shi Mingde issued the strongest warning against such measures by any top Chinese official to date.
"We don't see any point in sanctions," Shi said. "Sanctions could lead to retaliatory action, and that would trigger a spiral with unforeseeable consequences. We don't want this."
...
Using her [Merkel's] toughest rhetoric since the crisis began, she warned in a speech in parliament on Thursday that Russia risked "massive" political and economic damage if it did not change course in the coming days.
Russia's Deputy Economy Minister Alexei Likhachev responded by promising "symmetrical" sanctions by Moscow. But Shi urged patience, saying the door for talks should remain open even after a referendum on Sunday in which Ukraine's southern region of Crimea could vote to secede and join Russia. Merkel and other western leaders have denounced the referendum as illegal and demanded that it be canceled.
"We still see a chance to avoid an escalation. The door to talks is still open. We should use this possibility, also after the referendum," Shi said.
After the Referendum, so when Russia is already in control. More importantly, China joins the fray with threats over West's sanctions. Perhaps BTFWWIIID will make a re-appearance any minute now.

Crimea votes to quit Ukraine under guns of Russian tanks
Russian forces on Ukraine's borders
DEBKAfile Special Report Mar 15, 2014, 10:41 PM (IST)
Russian military movements and strength around Crimea do not exceed the level for securing the referendum taking place on the peninsula Sunday, March 16 against possible Ukrainian or Western disruptions. There are no signs of Russia planning to invade other parts of Ukraine. Neither have Ukraine’s European neighbors or the US bases on their soil declared unusual military preparedness. The Ukraine army is likewise stationary. But one or more of these forces may snap into unforeseen action during the referendum or after it’s over.

World War III: Ukrainian leader threatens to blow up Russia’s gas pipelines
Ukraine’s deputy national security chief and leader of the nationalist group Right Sector threatened to destroy Russia’s gas pipelines in retaliation for the country’s recent actions in Ukraine.
Dmitry Yarosh, who is also running for president in the upcoming May elections in Ukraine, told media that this aggressive action would have to be attempted to stop “World War III” and punish Russia for their intervention into his native country, Forbes reports.
“We cannot allow the enemy to carry out a blitzkrieg attack on Ukrainian territory,” Yarosh said, according to The International Business Times.
“Let the ground burn under the feet of the occupiers! Let them choke on their own blood when they attack our territory! Not one step back!
If Putin wants to make a grab for Ukraine’s east and south, he’ll need to move soon by MATT on MARCH 26, 2014 · in RUSSIA, UKRAINE If Putin decides to send in his troops, he has a narrow window in which to act. The winter of 2014 in Russia and Ukraine was relatively mild with little snow, while the spring is early and warm. The soil is drying rapidly, meaning that it will soon be possible to move heavy vehicles off of highways and into fields in southern areas of Ukraine close to the Black and Azov Seas. A key date is April 1, which marks the beginning of the Russia’s spring conscript call-up, when some 130,000 troops drafted a year earlier will have to be mustered out as replacements arrive. This would leave the Russian airborne troops, marines, and army brigades with many conscripts that have served half a year or not at all, drastically reducing battle readiness. The better-trained one-year conscripts can be kept in the ranks for a couple of months but no longer. Otherwise they’ll start demanding to be sent home, and morale will slip. As a result, Russia’s conventional military will regain reasonable battle-readiness only around August or September 2014, giving the Ukrainians ample time to get their act together.

'The hordes are coming': Ukrainians fear Russian invasion in northeast By Karl Penhaul, CNN updated 5:30 PM EDT, Sat March 29, 2014
STORY HIGHLIGHTS
Tens of thousands of Russian troops amass on border with eastern Ukraine
Band of overmatched Ukrainian volunteers has vowed to fight any Russian advance
Moscow insists it is only conducting military drills, but has pledged to protect ethnic Russians
Senkivka, Ukraine (CNN) -- They know Russian tanks would make short work of their ramshackle defenses and shallow trenches. But with U.S. and Europe shrinking from the fight, this rag-tag band of civilian volunteers know they could be the first, last and only line of defense if Moscow rolls into this corner of northeast Ukraine.
"We can't expect help from anybody else. Our own government is too passive. But hopefully we can rely on support from ordinary Ukrainians," Vladimir Fedorok told CNN on a blustery morning close to the Ukrainian border village of Senkivka.
In more peaceful times, Fedorok runs a farm supplies company. Now, with Russia estimated to be massing up to 88,000 troops just across the border from Ukraine's eastern frontier, he finds himself marshaling a newly formed self-defense committee.
They're setting up an outpost along the highway that cuts from the Ukrainian-Russian border to the Ukraine's interior.

He and his closest aides, Younis and Olec, are clad in British Army-issue uniforms from the Iraq "Desert Storm" campaign. They still bear the Union Jack insignia on the left sleeve.
"We picked them up at the bazaar. I've no idea how they got there. Including my boots, I paid around 100 euros," Fedorok said. Other members of his self-defense unit are sporting surplus combat jackets and pants from other European militaries. All of the volunteers say they have some army training from time spent doing military service. Fedorok said they've also been getting refresher courses from friendly Ukrainian army officers in recent days. Two members of the group claim -- like an unspecified number of other Ukrainian nationalists -- to have fought alongside Muslim insurgents against the Russians in Chechnya.
Best hope is to slow any advance
But if the Russians roll into eastern Ukraine, it will be very different from the house-to-house urban combat that has previously taken place in the Chechen capital of Grozny.
This region is home to sweeping expanses of farmland and scattered forests, classic terrain for a tank war -- the kind of scenario both Soviet and NATO forces drilled for during the Cold War years.
Fedorok and his patriots have encircled their dilapidated outpost with piles of old car tires. The plan: If the Russians stream down the highway en route to the district capital Chernigov, they'll burn rubber and set up a smokescreen.
They say they have no real weapons, but this band of brothers has made up a stash of Molotov cocktails, with rags stuffed into old vodka bottles. The few yards of trenches that stretch into a nearby tree line are only a fallback position, and hardly constitute a sturdy defensive line.
"As much as anything else, we're put here making a political point. We know this outpost is only an effort to slow down the Russians," Fedorok said matter-of-factly.
"I shouldn't be telling you this but our plan is to break down into five-man units and we will launch a guerrilla-style partisan war against the Russians," he added, declining to specify how many volunteers he has under his command.
But these paramilitary militias may not be entirely alone. Fedorok drives a few kilometers up the highway closer to the border to introduce us to a detachment of Ukrainian soldiers.
For now, they're coordinating operations. A fresh-faced army major with a Russian-made AK-74S assault rifle slung over his shoulder told us his men are on high alert.
"These are military times," he said as he showed us a little of his hardware: three armored personnel carriers mounted with heavy-machine guns, dug into the earth and camouflaged with branches from birch trees.
A few yards away stood a Russian-made T-80 tank. The major said there were more tanks half buried behind berms in the forest.
'Looking toward our brothers'
All the vehicles are pointing toward a bridge. The major, who declined to give his name, said the order was to defend the bridge or blow it up if the Russians advanced across the border.
But unlike the civilian self-defense militias, these soldiers seem a little unsure when I asked whether they would really stand and battle the Russians.
In Ukraine's Crimea region, the Ukrainian army confined itself to barracks or surrendered. Earlier this week, the Defense Ministry in Kiev said a full 75 percent of its force in Crimea either defected or simply went AWOL when the Russians moved in.
Here at the eastern border, the major in charge of this armored detachment shook his head slowly.
"I prefer to say that we are not pointing our tanks at the Russians but merely looking toward our brothers in case they advance in friendship," he said. The major said he could scarcely believe he was on high alert to battle troops from Moscow.
"We trained in the same military academies during Soviet times and after that. We see them as our brothers," he said.
The Pentagon's latest figures put the number of Russian troops massing just over the border at about 40,000. The Ukrainian government's National Defense and Security Council estimates the figure at 88,000, but that estimate may include units a little farther from the border region that could be deployed as a second wave in the event of an invasion.
Moscow has insisted it is only carrying out drills. And in televised comments Saturday, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov insisted his forces had no intention of crossing into Ukraine.
However, in a telephone conversation with President Barack Obama Friday night, Russian President Vladimir Putin once again reportedly raised concerns about ethnic Russians living in eastern Ukraine.
He suggested Ukrainian ultra-nationalists had been threatening ethnic Russians and driving them out of their homes and businesses -- the same accusations that Moscow used as a pretext to intervene in Crimea.
Standing tall and surveying his trench lines, self-defense commander Fedorok was in no mood to listen to any assurances from Moscow.
He said he was in no doubt: "The Russian hordes are coming."

Furious Russia Will Retaliate! Calls JPMorgan Hostile! “Illegal And Absurd” Payment Block Could Supercharge New Cold War Wednesday, April 2, 2014 7:14 0
(Before It's News) The brand new story below from Zero Hedge warns us that JPMorgan may have just supercharged the ‘new’ cold war while sending Russia into a frenzy due to an ‘illegal and absurd’ payment block by ‘hostile’ JPMorgan. A Before it’s News reader shares that at least Russia is going to the heart of the problem! Terming Russia’s present mood as ‘furious’, we learn that Russia WILL ‘retaliate’ and as the story clearly points out: As Ukraine found out last month, you don’t want to get Russia angry. Video reports also below.
We reported that “Monetary Blockade Of Russia Begins: JPMorgan Blocks Russian Money Transfer “Under Pretext” Of Sanctions.” This morning the story has finally blown up to front page status, which it deserves, where it currently graces the FT with “Russian threat to retaliate over JPMorgan block.” And unlike previous responses to Russian sanctions by the West, which were largely taken as a joke by the Russian establishment, this time Russia is furious: according to Bloomberg, the Russian foreign ministry described the JPM decision as “illegal and absurd.” And as Ukraine found out last month, you don’t want Russia angry.
More: The biggest U.S. bank thwarted a remittance from the Russian embassy in Astana, Kazakhstan, to Sogaz Insurance Group “under the pretext of anti-Russian sanctions imposed by the United States,” the ministry said yesterday in a statement on its website. Sogaz lists OAO Bank Rossiya, a St. Petersburg-based lender facing U.S. sanctions over the Ukrainian crisis, as a strategic partner on its website.
Interfering with the transaction was an “absolutely unacceptable, illegal and absurd decision,” Alexander Lukashevich, a ministry spokesman, said in the statement.
U.S. President Barack Obama announced the action against Bank Rossiya last month as part of a broadening of sanctions that targeted government officials and allies of Russian President Vladimir Putin, whose associates own Rossiya. The embassy’s transaction was for less than $5,000 dollars, a person with knowledge of the dispute said, asking not to be identified because such transfers aren’t public.
Did JPMorgan just move the second Cold War into semi-hot status? Very possibly

Satellite Photos Released Revealing Russian Military Build Up
Zero Hedge April 10, 2014 It’s not quite YouTube clips, but NATO has released satellite image-based proof that confirms the dramatic build up of Russian military forces along its borders. The images showing tanks, attack helicopters, and war planes, according to NATIO general Breedlove provide support for counter-moves by allies to safeguard their partners. Russia, for its part, has denied it has any plans to invade Ukraine and suggests that NATO is “using the crisis in Ukraine to rally its ranks in the face of an imaginary external threat to strengthen demand for the alliance … in the 21st century.” - *RASMUSSEN SAYS RUSSIA NOW HAS 40,000 TROOPS ON UKRAINE BORDERS As Channel 4 reports, The images released by General Breedlove are reported to have been taken on 22 March, nearly a month after the unrest in Crimea began that led to Russia’s annexation of the area. The photographs were taken by commercial satellite imaging company Digital Globe. You can see the images below.
