The Justice Department has quietly dismissed charges against two Jordanian migrants who were arrested after encroaching on a Marine military base earlier this year, leaving a host of questions about the incident.
In court documents, the U.S. Attorney in eastern Virginia said squelching the cases was in the interest of “the ends of justice” — boilerplate language that sheds little light on what went on.
The two men, Hamdan Yousef Hasan and Mohammed Khair Hassan Dabous, were nabbed by sentries as they tried to drive onto Marine Corps Base Quantico in Prince William County in May.
They claimed to be making a delivery run and were asked to wait while their identities were checked, but Mr. Dabous, the driver, continued to move the box truck forward, military authorities said. The sentries raised the vehicle barriers and arrested the men.
Immigration authorities initially told base officials that Mr. Hasan was on the terror watchlist, according to the Serious Incident Report filed after the incursion. But prosecutors, in court documents filed in September, said neither man is actually on a watchlist and neither the FBI nor U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement has national security concerns or other derogatory information.
The warnings came as Daniel Zeichner, the farming minister, suggested no amount of backlash from farmers would convince the Government to scrap its controversial “tractor tax”.
Mr Zeichner implied that Rachel Reeves, the Chancellor, would hold firm on her inheritance tax raid on agricultural land.
Thousands of farmers are set to descend on Parliament Square on Tuesday to express their anger over the policy, announced in last month’s Budget, which will mean farming assets worth more than £1 million are hit with a new 20 per cent levy.
The Treasury has claimed the changes would only affect a small number of farms. However, analysis by the National Farmers Union suggested that three-quarters of food produced by British farmers would be hit by the raid.

“There's recovering and reusing the ship. I think we will want to have at least two consecutive successes of a given design that lands at a specific point in the ocean, or smash into a specific point in the ocean, before we try to bring it back to the launch site.
We do not want to rain debris over Mexico or the US.
My guess is probably next year [in 2025] is when we will be able to reuse Starship.
But I think it's highly likely that this year we will bring the ship side of it to a controlled point in the ocean and have it basically land on a virtual tower somewhere in the Pacific or the Indian Ocean.
We just need to be confident that we can get through the high-heating portion of reentry reliably, and then we will bring the ship back, and it will land on the tower as well.”
